Shoot em in the foot so they fall out the tree and let the dog have em now and then. Other than that just shoot em. That's how my dad did it anyway. Not much fun barking at a tree just to get hooked up and led off.

in the winter I will take them but I quit harvesting from march till around October [ unless I know it's an old boar coon ] if you have a good dog that tree's well a little praise is all they need . these boy's that are serious about the compititions have dogs that rarely if ever taste fur .

Shot some out alive for the yong dog to let them fight. Other than that never. Just like hog hunting you kill them al you will be asking how come I can't get on a coon here anymore?

Why do you shoot the boars?

well I don't neccesarily take them either , just want to be sure and leave the sows between march and October due to them having or raising young ones  . one boar coon will service several sows so not as big a deal to take one of them if you just have to .

Wen I coon hunted I didn't take a gun. If I could climb up and shake the coon out then I'd let the dogs have it. If I couldn't get it out I'd  leave it to be run another day
