Went to try to catch some hogs that had been tearing up a fellows corn field.  Turned loose at the field and walked around w/o finding any fresh tracks since the rain last night.   About the time I get to the other end of the field I hear my old walker fall to baying way off in the distance.  Loaded up my pup (haint) and headed to her.  She was bayed on the edge of a slough off a small lake.  Turned out my pup and headed in.  When I got to the water she was on the other side so I started making my way to the end to go around to her.  My pup was gone and I assumed she was headed to daisy to help.  About that time out in the pond I hear a loud slap and a short yelp.  I knew what had happened before I got to the water.  There was nothing but a large boil out in the middle next where my old dog was still baying.  I guess the gator had been laying there listening to the old dog and nabbed my pup when she tried to swim across.  Long story short the hog broke bay before I could get there w/ the bulldog and despite a good effort on my old dog's part and long race w/ multiple bays, I didnt get the hog.  Went and got a small boat and gig and with the tracking box was able to retreive my pup so I could burry her.  Gator had stashed her under some limbs and junk.  She was a little black outlaw dog about a year old that was making a pretty decent dog.

This is getting out of control.  In the last week, I know of 2 other dogs besides my own, that have been taken by gators... all three within 10 miles of each other.    One was 9'6", one was 11'6", and I should know the length of the 3rd here soon.  The south eastern government needs to realize the havoc their latest "cash crop" has brought upon us.

There is no reason for so many mature gators to be out there, in a position to kill livestock or humans.  If the government won't take care of this imbalance, the people will.

I'm sorry you lost Haint PigSnatcher

Noah,

The darn gators are rediculous up here, I am sure they are just as bad if not worse where you are.  They are drawing for 1000 gator hunts and issuing tags to some landowners but it isnt enough to hurt them. I can take you to places where they are laying on the bank every 20 yards appart as far as you ride. There was an article in the news paper just yesterday about a gator coming up in a yard and eating a dog while it and a small child were playing.  For the last three years in a row we have lost a dog to gators.  Now that is being carefult to avoid them, there are some places around here I just will not turn a dog loose except for the dead of winter.

You know I am OK with it if a hog kills my dog.  The dog was doing its job and the hog was just deffending its self, but it eats me up to have a stupid lizzard get one.  Dog was doing its job and bam, ambushed. Besides the fact that I liked the dog and thought something of it, all that time and hard work down the drain, boom , gone over  a stupid lizzard.  That is a sick feeling when you hear that slap and yelp.

I saw an article in the local Woods N' Water magazine where the FWC here in Fla has sold out all 6,000 (thats three zeros) aligator permits for this year. Permits run about $275 for a resident and $1200 for a non-resident.......

Now you know why we have gators....its a money maker for the state! They would rather have the gators than us dog hunters any day, they make more money off the gators!
