I have a question. I have a sow that is due to drop a litter next month. She is in our pen with our boar, who is about half her size currently. I was advised by an old timer yesterday that I should separate my sow before she gives birth because the boar may eat her babies if they're penned up together? Any of y'all have experience with this? I wanted to see what others thought as well. If we have to, we will build a partition in the pen where she will be separate. Our buddy stated that they eat the afterbirth and the boar could get carried away and eat the babies too. I don't want this to happen. Thanks in advance.

bacon had a litter a couple months ago and I have 2 boars that are equal to or slightly bigger than bacon and the piglet that died was sometime at birth. from MY only captive feral hog birthing, the boars didn't do anything more than try to get my a$$ when I went in the pen to ck on the piglets. they protected them like they were mothers. again, its my first litter, so just 1 situation would no way in any affect be constituted as experience. I have though heard the same thing from other folks and the book I got on how to raise and become a pig farmer, they said to separate the boars from the mother and piglets bc they mite kill n eat them.

Why should I trade one tyrant three thousand miles away for three thousand tyrants one mile away? An elected legislature can trample a man's rights as easily as a king can!

I've had sows have pigs several times in the pen with boars and never had a problem.

I have had multiple litters and I never separate the boar from the piglets. But I have seen a boar eat piglets in a very small pen.

I had a neighbor once who had about 3 acres fenced off with hotwire and had around 50 hogs in there (domestic hogs). I watched a big ole sow nursing piglets laying on her side and watched two different big boars walk right up like it was a buffet and start eating piglets. The boars would pick em up one at a time and walk off with them and go eat them. The sow never got up off the ground, like she didn't even care. I don't know if this has anything to do with anything, but this fellow had chicken houses and he fed the hogs mostly dead chickens.
