I got to thinking after reading about how many dogs people put on the ground and the different styles of dogs people use.

How many of y'all hunt both long range and short range dogs together?  It seems that when I am out hunting with my friends, we talk before hand about who's bringing what dogs, and it usually ends up that we have different styles of dogs on the ground.  We have a few between us that get out and cover some country and they bay pretty loose.  Then we also have a few that hunt pretty close or just wind off the mule and they are a little more apt to put some teeth on a hog.  Now we may end up with 6 dogs on the ground, but 3 are out yonder, and 3 are nearby.  I can't count the number of times the go yonder dogs have one bayed, and on the way to the bay, the closer hunting dogs end up catching a pig en route to the bay.    It's almost as though we are hunting two different packs, rather than a mixed pack.

Do any of y'all hunt in a similar fashion, or do you run all short, all medium, or all long range dogs together.

CircleC,

Funny you typed this ....I was thinking about the place we hunted near Flatonia earlier this year......was hoping that after the first of the year I could join ya'll again and mix a few RCD's in with the dogs ya'll bring to see what happens........was just on my mind to "mix" things up......

Cody,
Your welcome to hunt there with us anytime. Picked up significantly more land than when you hunted there with us last.  We also have some places to run during deer season hunting city hogs.

I like my dogs to check in with me at least every 15 minutes unless on a hot trail and as far as bay style my pack is loose enough to slip a .357 bullet in but I also have two younger dogs that I do have to holler at a few times to get out before pulling the trigger but they are figuring out how the gun works and learning that once I get to the bay to not be hanging off the pig. Now that you got me thinking of my packs style of hunting I kind of miss running the grab dogs and knife action. Thanks for bringing back the memories, I can feel the adrenaline pumping already!

All our dogs are long range... they are gone for about 30-45 minutes at a time. Sometimes it kinda sucks waiting, but we catch a lot more hogs now.

When i first got most of the dogs, they were short-medium. Had one dog that would loop out long on hot sign, but only on hot sign. That same dog is now very long range and now that im runnin' some hounds, they have all kinda stuck with them and hunt over 3/4 of a mile a lot of times.

average- i would say they usually get out 800 yards....

We call 300-400 yards about medium and anything less than 200 short range.

Sometimes we have to leave the hounds at the house depending on the property. Without the hounds, the curs and catahoula's average about 500-600 yards out. Still kinda deep compared to a lot of my buddies dogs. Cheesy

A buddy of mine will bring this bloodhound named "buddy." Don't get me wrong, the dog was good back in his prime, i've seen the pictures many times.  Grin However, buddy is very old now and he doesn't do so well. All i hear is.....BUDDY....GET AHEAD....I SAID, GET AHEAD....poor ol' buddy sits at our feet.  Sad     Grin
