We shoot over our dogs on a routine basis.  If someone new is going I have a short discussion before the hunt about gun safety and how important the dogs are to me.  I tell them to follow me in to the bay and let me call the shot.  However, most of the new hog hunters that I have carried are seasoned hunters on other types of game.

Your dogs, your choice. My dogs, Springfield Armory 45 ACP! I've had guys try and strap up like they were going to war and talked  with them about the true need of the firearm and I'm not Gonna tell any American they can't carry their firearm!!!!! Hunter safety and common sense should prevail.

Got a questino for the guys that don't bring a gun. Are you saying you have a gun in the truck or you just don't bring one period? Im not judging in any way, what you do is your decision, same goes for me, I just can't see going to the woods with the intent of catching an animal that can literally beat a dog to a pulp and beat grown man down  ( I know its not a common occurrance but still...) without a gun of some sort at least at the truck. Im not even gonna get started on some of the wierdo's i've run into while hunting that weren't supposed to be on the property I was on. Like I said not trying to start anything but for me, my gun is like having a 4x4 truck........I may not need it and I may not ever use it but its there, just in case......I may be too paranoid lol but with exception to work (chemical plant) I carry a gun almost as much as I carry my wallet/phone...... I like the re-assurance that if it hits the fan I have something to help my crippled ass  Grin
Sometimes I will have one in the truck sometimes I don't but I never think about that while hunting and no one brings one with us. Most of the time it wouldn't do any good to have it because it's usually to thick to see 5 foot where the hog will be bayed. But I have recently bought a ranger and it has a gun rack already in it so I have considered putting a gun in there just incase i run up on some dog thieves or something like that but I would not be shooting over any dogs for any reason. If I can't catch the hog I do not want it any other way regardless of what he has done

I carried one when I first time I shot over a dog was the last time it scared me to much now I just carry my big knife. I'm a good shot practice plenty but it's just to hairy shootin around dogs. Especially other people's dogs.

I've been running dogs for about seven years now even when I was coon huntin I was iffy in who had the gun or who shot now I have seven dogs that I run and it took me 3 years to tweak and change and get to where I catch hogs pretty regular and I'm not real keen on the idea of some one with a gun around them not to mention if my main dog even sees a rifle u may as well no even turn her loose because she going to stay by my feet because she is terrified of guns and people who haven't hunted with dogs before are like "oh I'm bringing a gun" no your not because if u get scared about something running up on you and you shoot of my dogs for rarely check in . I don't carry a gun my buddy carrys a pistol and if u didn't know he had it u wouldn't he call it his emergency stop button invade some thing bad goes wrong which is understandable if a dog get cut to bad for help put it out of its misery or a big hog and it goes south kill it before it does further damage but I usually don't allow guns unless I trust the person with it just my opinion

at least yu guys have an option. here in california all hogs must be shot with centerfire firearm or archery. and its 3 dogs per hunter and so that means you need one liscensed hunter for each three dogs and that hunter must have the equiptment capable of legally taking hogs with.

U ever tried to knife a 320 lb boar hog when your catch dog is laying there dead fixitlouie?  No catch dog no gun and dogs ain't gonna quit baying. Now what?  U ever had a boar bust a bay while u headed there and he charges u? No trees to climb and catch dog no where to be seen? Then what?  I always carry a gun even if it's a .22.

Better to have one an not need it than to need one and not have it. Have a designated gun toter you trust ( or yourself) but i'd be real uncomfortable with every tom, dick n harry on the hunt packin heat

I used to always say the same thing. No guns! I have a new helper that was insistent on always bringing his 40cal pistol. It was last Saturday that I told him never leave home without it.

Dropped 2 of my dogs against my will due to no sign, they made a 700yd loop and came back to 500 and bayed. We get within 150yds then walk the cd in. We got about 50-70yds from the bay and the dogs stopped barking. They came to me checked in and went back to baying, only this time a walking bay. We got within 15yds in the thicket and my new help hollered big hog so I sent the cd. On impact he was thrown and the hog continued walking my 2 baydogs. I see my cd walking clumsily to the hog so I grab him up walk him to the hog and he is pulling to get to the hog again so I let him go and he fell over. His leg was broke! With no catchdog to send and a hog walking my top 2 dogs something had to be done. My help waited till the dogs both went to the rear and he put it down. A bad situation could have gotten a lot worse with no gun. My cd now has on an external fixator and the hog head is in the freezer awaiting a European mount. Always carry a gun and always have it in responsible hands. It can save dogs lives as well as peoples. The hog weighed in at 315 with a 3"cutter and a 2.75" cutter

Thanks Mike. Vet said 1month of meds and the fixator then he will pull one side of the fixator and leave the other in for a month longer. He has been home for exactly a week and he has been puttin weight on it for a few days. The hard headed sob wants to get back to his job but he will sit out till at least mid summer. I made another post with the story so others can see. Hope all is well on your end also. I still owe you and Travis a hunt too when y'all are out this way

I would just talk to the landowner and tell him what you would like.. Just don't get him to mad good hunting places are real hard to get! Most people that never hunted with dogs just don't know they just think it is hunting so they have to have guns!!
