As A few of you know I make a few knives from time to time. (no I don't sell any) After this morning, it makes me wonder if it's time to hang it up. Without a major expensive upgrade in equipment it is so durn hard to make something I can be proud of. I struggled so much trying to keep the temp where it needed to be I think I ruined a blade I had a buttload of time in. Sorry to vent but it's got my panties in a wad!

yep...having the right tools can make any job lots' easier...at least you have the patience and talent to build a nice knife which most of us do not...

Using gas, I've used coal in the past. I just have a heck of a time getting it to stay at one temp and I think I got this blade too hot on the end couple inches.

Do you have a thermocouple probe or a pyrometer from a turbo diesel laying around? You can set it up on a thermostat to kick on/off a blower fan to blow O2/air into ur forage increasing, maintaining or decreasing the temp. Put a hi/low on/off setting to kick the fan on or off. I may can hook you up on some stuff from work depending on what u may need. Either a digital or mechanical over electrical (digital would be more accurate, while mechanical would be longer lasting/reliable) temp gauge.

I have a pyrometer in it but I'm using my shop vac on the blower side for air and a ball valve for the propane. I really need to put a needle valve or something more exact on the gas. I have a homemade gate valve to control the air. I salvaged the blade and I guess it will be my new one since I don't want to give it to someone else. All the issues polished out of it. I did anneal a couple more horseshoers rasps to shape a couple more so I haven't give it up yet. On a positive note I got my Ugly Dog Devastor vest today and it fits pretty good. The dog accepted it just fine and could run wide open in it. Good service, ordered it Monday and got it clear up here today!

Yep I messed up one I really liked also. Takes some time to do it with out expensive tools but can be done as u know just slow down and have fun you mess up oh well you aint doing it for the money so have fun

What brand of horseshoe rasps do you use? I have heard that Bellota rasps are 1095 steel. Wonder what the Simmonds Rasps are?

I have been using whatever rasps I have. But I know I have done some with the Bellota rasps. I have been taking them to 1450 for the quench which is what I believe is critical temp for carbon steel. I have made some from 1080, 1084 and 1095 in the past. Thanks for the encouragment and info. I got the scales and finger guards put on today. Just gotta clean em up and sharpen and makes some sheaths. Having friends that are shoers helps with the supply of rasps!

Thank you for posting Charles, I finished the sheath for the bottom one. It is a crossdraw, not sure why I did it but you have to mix things up. The top one is only 1/4" shorter than the bottom. I will have the sheath sewed for that tonite. Another month and they will get broke in!
