Lots of good reading online concerning game dogs. I don't know to much about bloodlines and what not. But im always reading and learning. This fella is pretty interesting. I wander if any of his line of dogs are still around.

There are still some Mayfield dogs around. He was a colorful character to say the least.

I never met him but I heard that he was a hell of a conditioner.
If you like conditioning, look up Lemm. He was a guy who built mills and was a well known conditioner. The methods he used I used for myself when I was wrestling and competing in MMA.

I've watched some vids of him on YouTube, he says some interesting things, like never let a working dog jump down from a truck bed, it loosens their kidneys and eventually causes permanent kidney damage which affects the dogs endurance forever. Does anyone else believe this to be true?

I've watched some vids of him on YouTube, he says some interesting things, like never let a working dog jump down from a truck bed, it loosens their kidneys and eventually causes permanent kidney damage which affects the dogs endurance forever. Does anyone else believe this to be true?

Mayfield, from what I have gleaned from dogmen that knew him had some very different opinions that not many others agreed with.

No you must be talking about Lemm, that guy was a bit crazy but he was ahead of his time with conditioning dogs with interval training. Mayfield never really used treadmills, not to say he never did but he mainly used a machine called a jenny/catmill. |

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
AS FOR A MAYFIELD BLOODLINE, WELL THE JURY IS STILL OUT ON THAT ONE. MAYFIELD REALLY DIDN'T HAVE A BLOODLINE SO MUCH WHEN HE WAS ACTIVE. HE JUST USED WHAT HE FELT WAS A GOOD DOG. IT WAS NOT UNTIL AFTER HE HAD BEEN RETIRED FROM SHOWING DOGS, THAT THE MAYFIELD BLOODLINE APPEARED ON THE SCENE. HIS PREMIER STUD DOG WAS A LITTLE RED DOG HE CALLED MAYFIELD'S DIBO. I DON'T BELIEVE THE PEDIGREE WAS ANYWHERE CLOSE TO BEING ACCURATE. NOR DO MOST OTHER DOGMEN WHO KNEW DON. MOST PEOPLE AGREE THAT DON JUST MADE UP HOW "TIGHT" THE BLOOD WAS, AND JUST SOLD PUPPIES ON THE MAYFIELD NAME, MOSTLY OVERSEAS BECAUSE KNOWLEDGEABLE DOGMEN STEERED CLEAR OF IT, BECAUSE IT WASN'T A VERY GOOD FAMILY OF DOGS. TIME HAS PROVEN THIS TO BE TRUE. TRY AND FIND A MAYFIELD BRED DOG TODAY THAT'S WORTH A CRAP. GOOD LUCK.

I also knew Robert Lemm. He was in fact the King when it came to building treadmills. Lemm's mills were light years ahead of the competition when it came to a free spinning mill. There are several mill builders who have copied their designs from Lemm. As for Lemm being "crazy"? I think he was really just more arrogant than crazy. He for sure thought he was the smartest guy in the room. I've seen that Lemm conditioning video he put out in the 90's. There is some good info in there, but there is some bull crap nonsense in there too. His ideas about not letting a dog jump down from a mill to protect the kidneys seems a little far fetched to me. He also recommended using nothing but Science Diet KD (kidney diet) food? Whatever  He actually said in that video, that if it were possible, he would have the dog running the mill in the back of a pick-up truck on the way to the SHOW. Seriously? LMAO. Lemm was a craftsman, I will give him that. And he built a nice mill. But Lemm had an exaggerated sense of his own entertainment value. |

Earl Tudor from Hobart, Oklahoma. Best of all time . . . Period.
Best in the modern era . . . D-Town, hands down. Went 27 - 0 in a two year span in Mexico, then took a 5 year lay off and went 61 & 5 in a two year span.

Yup your right, I would def agree with you Wayout. Another couple of my favorites were the Silver Fox Maurice Carver, and the Mountain Man Mr. Hughes. Liefal like I said earlier Lemm was a great conditioner and was doing things similar to how we condition athletes now both human and animal. I really like watching the guy he is super entertaining, and you can see his passion. |
