I run vests on 2 of my three strike dogs...the four pups are already comfortable wearing them just in case they will be getting rough...then at that time it will be decided...

Each dogs totally different my strike dogs in general are very rough but get hot with a vest and they generally just get a cut collar my catch dogs whether running or on a lead always wear gear.I also hunt around water 9 times outa 10 and this plays a big role in my decisions.I own about 20 different vest that collect dust haven't ever really found one that I am comfortable with on my strike dogs.

liefalwepon I'm glade you asked this question cause I ponder on it constantly.  I have only been hunting for a few years now and I hunt with a couple of ole school guys that do not believe in vest and only one of them has started vesting his catch dog since I started hunting with them, the other one is on his 3rd bulldog in 4 years which is another whole story.

I had a very rough strike dog that was a Parker and it did not matter what size hog he was going to try him at least once.  I ran a vest on him and I don't think it hindered him at all.  He did almost have a heat stroke but it was in a chest high cotton field in August at about 2pm and pushing triple digits temp.  You know what got him was an big ole mean sow, I assume she either got him down on the ground or pinned him up side a pine tree cause she busted his bladder.  There was not a mark on him but the vet said he was busted up inside when he opened him up.

I'm like l.h.cracker I have a bunch of different vest but the most flexible one that I have found that I run on my catch dog is the Southern Style which is now owned by HardCoreHogDogs.  I have one of the suits with attached collar, chin guard and leg guards and that dog caught 50+ hogs last year with a couple being sure enough rank boars with good cutters and not a single cut through.  The vest is very flexible and he can move in it.  However he did almost drown last year when we turned two catch dogs to a boar on the edge of a pond and the boar swam the pond which had Lillie pads in it.  When I got to him he was bobbing like a cork and had done gone under several times.  The Lillie pads had him all tangled up and when I swam out there to get him they just about got me to.  I was honestly pretty scarred before I got my feet back under me, thought I was a gonner also.  I did have a buddy there that had the hog caught with the other catch dog that did not have a vest on.  We got the hog and the dogs and myself lived to catch another one but I told my buddy when I crawled out of the water I don't care if I ever do that again.

It don't slow mine down any but I start em young with a vest if there showing to be rough then judge as needed my biggest dog cowboy is 85 lbs or so he never hits the ground with out a vest period. I can't run him in warmer weather cuz he will over heat. But when it's cool he is on the ground.  Doesn't slow him down at at all but he ain't fast to start with. I even went as far as adding leather on the inside of the vest

My 2 lead dogs now,  were rough starting out, took the blows. vested em made it worse. Got rougher. Took it off and they took the blows but finally got smart and now at 4 they've backed that a** up! I do believe it will make one rougher.

I've heard the same thing about some other dogs, that the vest makes them feel invincible.  Kinda like when I competition coon hunted a bunch.  This was when the astro 320 was the thing and every body had that and a tritronics trash breaker. I've seen guys tape 2 D cell batteries together on a collar to make there dogs think they had the shock collar on,  because the dog knew when he would get shocked and when he wouldn't. Sucker would run trash without the collar , and would hunt straight when it was on.

The reason that some get rougher is becuz they get hit and realize they ain't hurt so feel safer than they should. If dog gets hit and never stops with out a vest then that dog need a vest if they get hit or try a bit more then likely the dog has a bit of brain and may not need a vest. This can only be learned by truly knowing your dogs but it ain't fool proof ether lol

i dont run vest. every now and again ill put one on my bulldog but im not that guy that wont let my dog go because i forgot the vest at home. i hunt thickets and ive seen peoples bulldogs getting hung up going to bays and thats only running 100 or so yards i know a curr dog cant run in that stuff with a vest on for a few hours without overheating or getting slowed down. if it gets real bad a curr dog will back up and bark and after a few time of getting carried back to the fourwheerer they have learned what causes them to get cut and thats getting to ruff. i would not start one with a vest i would just hunt the dog and hope he figured it out and if he didnt id hunt him as long as i had him.

It seams like hear lateley most of my hogs run straight to the water and swim or bay up in the water. I almost lost a b/d friday trying to swim with a vest on. Someone needs to make a vest with floatation built in.

There is a company that does, or at least at one point did make a vest with built in flotation. Can't remember who it was though

I have had them swimming in the river for almost an hour with the running vests on them...

I run vest on my rough dogs. I run southern style traditional full catch vest. I have had all mine made to fit my dogs. None of them have any trouble swimming or running. To me the most important things are fit, material, flexibility and protection. The vest I run do not hold water. They fit well enough to allow full range of motion. Flexible enough they can still move. As far as I'm concerned as good if not better protection than anything out there.
