Had my buddy dog get tagged on the inside of his elbow friday night almost 100% sure it was a snake, we bayed in a creek and it was pretty warm. Swelling came on fast and was a booger to get under control but we managed to.... he will be down at least another week. Just a heads up.

Vet gave me a sweating salve to put all over the leg due to the swelling, you put it on then wrap it and it draws the heat/swelling out.

I thought it was an infection from the hig we caught friday night....figured it bit him or something but the vet thought otherwise.

All i know is it worked great in 48hrs, pulled all the heat/infection out.

He still has a little ways to go til he is 100% but im almost positive that the meds the vet gave did a better job than if i woulda worked on him alone.

Must have been a bad snake or he just had a bad reaction to the bite? Usually a little Benadryl and the swelling is normally gone by the next day.

Some of mine have been bitten so much that they swell for an hour or two and are good as new haha.

Mike i thought the exact same, figured it was infection from a hog poke/bite myself. All the snakebit dogs ive ever dealt with were alot the same as you are talking.

I will say this much, whatever it was really did some damage, the insude of his leg ruptured from the wound and ill tell ya, ive got a strong stomach and usually laugh at what makes others lose their lunch but the wound he has is down right nasty. There is no infection in it and its a good healthy pinkish color but boy its rough. Gonna be a while before he is right.

Sounds more like a spider bite. Black widows & Brown Recluse are way more damaging to a dog then Copperheads or Cotton mouths. You will get a lot of infection & necrosis from spider bites where like said above most snakebites swell for a day or two & then it is over with. Rattlesnake are a whole new ballgame tho. They are serious and a big rattler can kill a dog.

Cajun you may very well be right, i know whatever it was sure packed a punch, never seen one get like this from a snake.
