I’ve got 14 grown dogs on my yard, all healthy. Had an amerigo pup about a month ago, 2 rounds of shots (shots came from vet) stated loosing appetite, next day started having bloody stool. Day after started her on fluids and antibiotic. Next day she was dead.  So, few weeks later had a guy give me a bull dog pup, 2 rounds of 10-way....today I noticed she hasn’t eaten her food, got her to my house and here comes the bloody stool.  What the hell is going on. Both pups had also been wormed on Nemex   I just don’t see how this can be parvo given they had both bad shots.  Any ideas other than spending $2-300 at the vet to get an answer?  The one I have now is alive and still has plenty of energy at the moment but I have the feeling that will be changing soon.

I would immediately think either coccidiosis or Hook worms and get the dog on Corid and some sort of anthelmintic. I like the the safe guard liquid for goats for pups and I would dose her pretty good(1.5-2ml) for 3 days In a row. Somebody else may chime in and I may be dead wrong. But that would be the route I took

How old is this pup and how long have you had it?
When did you start it on the first shot and the 2nd shot?

I’m thinking coccidia like Slim said. I would give the pups 5 cc’s of Corid for 5 days in a row. Had a bad experience with it years ago, every pup I raise now gets about 2 tablespoons of Corid in their gallon size water bowl for several months.

10-4, appreciate the responses.   This pup was born in October, had shots at 9 and 12 weeks I believe. Where would I find corid?  Bad thing is I’m heading out of town tomorrow for 2 days and have no one I can count on to look after it. I’ve got her on lactated ringer drip right now to keep her hydrated

Side note, I know all about coccidia as I raised commercial chickens for years...it’s bad news, but pretty common during certain times of the year. I also feed raw chicken...been on raw diet for 5+ years. It’s fresh sanitary chicken, but I’m sure it still potentially carries coccidia since it’s not cooked

If you have parvo on your yard, the pups need to have completed there immunisation  shots before coming onto your yard.   Those 5 way 7 way 10 way shots etc take a couple rounds to build up any kind of immunity from what I gather.
My advice if you have parvo is not to use the multi way shots because they don't prevent pups from getting the virus on some yards that have the virus.        Search for Neo Tech vaccines.    NeoPar is a modified live virus vacs and is the answere for many who have not seen satisfactory results with the multi way stuff.  They also make a couple good distemper vacs.   One being NeoVac DA2 I believe.         Thankfully I don't have these viruses on my yard but this Neo Tech stuff is what I order and give so the pups I send out can go to any yard no with no problems.     Some distributors sale single doses. Some sale 10 and 25 doses only.   Reguardless of what you use, the pups need it long before coming to your yard if you have parvo.  Giving a dog a vaccine that has already come in contact with the virus and has it incubating inside him is to little to late

Any feed store should have the Corid.

Don’t think it’s parvo, I’ve been too consistent about vaccines.  So I looked up corid, it’s same ingredient and % solution as Amprol which we used to treat poultry. I had a case left over. I’m going to try it.

Fort Dodge also makes the modified live virus. All these are good responses. Cocidia can be carried by birds of any type. It doesn't have to be chickens. If they defecate or even drink out of the feed or water your dog has access to then they could potentially get it. I almost think the amerigo pup had parvo but suspect this one could have cocidia. Mainly because cocidia although deadly, doesn't typically work as fast as parvo. The amerigo went quick. Hydration is key, keep the fluids going. Antibiotics aren't going to do.much in my opinion except kill good floura that is needed in the gut. I would put some probiotics down it and treat for cocidia and pray like hell it works.

My timeframe of the Amerigo death might have been a little off. In all reality she was probly dehydrated longer than I realized. Knowing she had been vaccinated by a vet probly made me brush off her loss of appetite as an upset stomach longer than I though because I assumed there  was no way she could have gotten parvo. She was 6 months old when she died and  Fat as a tick until the last few days. The symptoms, smell, and color of the stool in this current pup is exactly the same as the amerigo. Either way, I really appreciate the quick responses and I’ll will keep y’all updated on her progress. Just got 4-5 ml of amprol in her, so we shall see.

Checked her just now...Hasn’t had another bloody stool  . She’s peeing good, I guess from all the fluids I been giving. She wants go drink and keep trying, but throws it up immediately. Still no appetite.  Any tips to help with the vomiting?   Still plenty of energy too

To my knowledge you can give a dog OTC Dramamine.

I'd keep administering the fluids. Many times with cocidia they quit eating but not drinking even though they are nauseous. She will keep throwing up of she is able to drink on her own. I wouldn't allow her access to free choice food or water yet. Let the meds start working good. From my experience it won't take long before she starts getting past the nausea once it does. I would also start her back on feed with wet food and not full portions. Maybe put an egg or 2 on it. Her gut is sore and the wet is just more fluid she is getting.

Thanks to yalls input, the pup is doing good. After 3 days of amprol (corid) she is back eating and no more vomit or bloody stool. Mike I think I’ll use your trick of amprol in their water for the first few months next time I have more young dogs.
