I've got a gyp with 8 three week old pups, the problem is the pups are really pullin her down.  Does anybody know of anything that I can do to help her.  I feed Shawnee High Quality 27/11 and have never had this kind of trouble.  Any help is appreciated.

Most of the times when bitches "fade" while nursing, it has less to do with the brand of dogfood than other factors.  Warm bedding/housing in winter is a MUST.  Cold weather will pull weight off a nursing dog fast.  Also, having plenty of fresh water is a MUST.  Milk is 80% water anyway.  Without plenty of water, they can't make enough milk and the pups will pull them down faster.  Also, the very best thing you can do is de-worm the bitch correctly when you breed her, and again about 10 days before she whelps.  I use Safeguard on a pregnant bitch and I give it about a week to 10 days before they whelp, whether they look wormy or not.  There are several different doses of safeguard, I use the one in the small bottle with the "goat".  The correct dosage is 1cc per 2 1/2 lbs body weight (if you use the goat wormer).  That means a 50 lb. dog will get 20 cc.  Give it 3 days in a row.  Also give her a droncit pill for tapeworms.  Neither of these will hurt the pups in any way.  Once the bitch whelps, keep her bowl full with good quality feed to where she doesn't know the food bowl has a bottom to it.  Pups usually won't pull a bitch down until they get 3-4 weeks old (if the bitch is in good shape when she whelps).  I buy the cheapest fattiest hamburger meat in the grocery store, and feed the bitch one pound of raw hamburger every day and free choice puppy food.  I usually start feeding the hamburger when the pups open their eyes and continue until I wean the pups.  I have wormed and fed this method for 15 years, and had females that were still making milk and nursing when the pups were 7 weeks old, and have the pups on raw meat also at the same time.  The last litter I just weaned, I didn't pull the bitch off the puppies until they were a full 7 weeks, and I put this bitch back on the chain fatter than she was when I bred her.     Now this obviously can get expensive, but how much is too much if someone thinks enough of the parents to make the breeding?

another thing that's real important is to worm the momma dog, even while she's nursing. it's real easy to forget that, but when you think about it-she's cleaning up all that mess from the puppies all the time, just reintroducing those worms back into her system from their stool. another thing that fattens em up like crazy is greasy gravy. take about a half cup of vegetable oil, lots of flour, cook it up with some beef broth. it's a little bit of trouble but man the'll eat it up!

start feeding the pups so they dont need so much milk.
I would make a formula for the pups

1 can of evaporated milk or goats milk
1 egg yolk, no whites
2 cups of plain old yogurt. Make sure it is not the NON-Fat...get the regular one with fat
3 oz of water

Blend and pour in a large diameter dish with some dry puppy food about 1 cup per pup

Let it sit for 20 minutes till the food is super soggy, mash it up if needed.....
the pups will love it and take some of the load off of the female
my dog had 14 pups all survived and she didnt lose any weight. She would eat about 8 cups of food per day and I would feed the pups the mixture above at least once a day

Guys, I really appreciate all the advice.  After trying some of the "recipe's" she is starting to look better.  I am about to wean the pups so she should bounce back pretty quick.
