This year I've had horrendous luck catfishing.  I can take people out with me, and they can catch fish, but I've been stuck reeling in dinks all spring & so far during this summer.  I finally put a good cat on the bank Saturday night.  The gar had been eating me alive in the river, and I was nearly out of bait when I moved about 50 yards upstream & threw out my last 3 baits.  The last cast I made, I ended up throwing right in the roots of a downed tree.  I felt of the line a little & knew it was hung up, but since I was out of bait, I just stuck it in a rod holder & hoped for the best.  Sure enough, the tree pole was the one this fish hit.  It took me about 5 minutes to get him into the shallow water, and my buddy Bray jumped in and landed him for me.  Good ol' Bray paid the price with a nice fish bite to the hand, but I don't think he cared.  We were just glad to finally get a good one caught & go home.  Anyway, here's a picture of him.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention his weight.  Duh.  He went 37 lbs, and I didn't weigh him until an hour after I caught him.  I left my dern scales at home & had to wait til I got back to get a weight.  We were guessing him high twenties, but missed it by quite a bit.  I'm in an online fishing tournament on the brotherhood of catfishermen website right now, and it's over July 4th.  I'd been kinda sweating it, because I'm the team captain and all 3 of my partners had weighed in fish.  I was probably starting to look like a jerk.  Good thing this fella bit when he did, 'cause Bray had fallen asleep on the bank & I knew it was about time to head to the casa.  Funny how a big fish can kick some new life into ya!!
