I grew up, summers, easters, spring breaks on that intercoastal water way about two miles from the mouth, fishing from grandpa's pier, watching them cattle swim and drove up the highway was always a highlight to me. No one could understand why I was so damn interested in those cattle drive, I guess I don't really know either but I still remember it and think it is cool beans!
I have not been down there in a few years, last trip I made, seems the folks that run that riverbend bar & grill/boat ramp enjoy watching and feeding the hogs a steady diet, I guess they think they are wildlife or something.
Never got to do any hunting but got plenty of feed back from trustworthy friends that have, from what they say, thats not anice place to hunt.
Forgot to put I would love to see pICTUres and Stories that you have about that part of the country!

I took my airboat and dogs last winter, launched at riverbend drove the airboat over the levee and turned out about 4pm. At 10:00am the next morning we were still gathering dogs. It was 41 degrees and wet. After killing 2 large rattlesnakes along the way. and wading through the nastiest mud you've ever smelt. Dogs feet cut all up from the oyster shells. I would not advise this on my worst enemy. We did manage to catch 3 hogs that I ran out into a big open flat with the airboat. I would never attempt this again.

Well Mike I have many stories because I am from this area. I have grown up on the same 40 acres for 39yrs. This is where i was born and this is where I will stay. Not only is the part of the country ruff but the people that run dogs and work cows in this area are the same. This area is where you find people like "Rockin-P-" that will give you an honest hard days work and ask for nothing. This is an area that a man is happy that if he can get on his horse and load his dogs and ride or hunt and not see anyone the whole day. It is an area that when the men are as good as you can find! I sure would hate for one of them youngsters cross up with one of um! Not to many people like our ways but the way I see, you just got to live with it. I have to many stories to post but if you want you can PM me and I can tell you a few. I will look for the picture of the one on the ranch with a big boar bayed up and a cloud of bees swarming the dogs and hog. Just had to grit my teeth and got it dun. Put my shirt over my head where they wouldn't sting me on the head but ended up killing the hog with my pocket knife because I didn't have a big knife, we were working cows! Anyway ther aint a gooder feller than old RocknP!

I love hunting that part of the country, i've hunted quite a bit in Matagorda and Jackson Counties... my favorite places to hunt are down there. Beautiful country along the river bottoms. But them islands along the coast... been there, done that and don't wanna go back.

Come on Mike you need to come on, there's one thing about the island that I learned real quick, if you have a dog that wants to put there mouth on a hog before you get there, he won't last long! And the rattlesnakes won't chase you like the stinkin cotton mouths. We have hunted it for years with the Game Bioligist. Those dogs can smell them snakes just like my horse! He will start making the god owfulest snorts and grunts when he smells on. The island in not as bad as the intercoastal canal, I have swam that SOB a couple of time's. That is a long ways across and hope like hek that a barge isn't coming! If you will go look at the pictures that Mrsktchemwcurs posted last night and notice those little green thorns(Dogs on Hogs)! Yep them som hurtin son a guns! That blood on my face was mine! I grabbed that second hog and he started spinning with all the dogs on him and all I could do is hold on, well in to the thorns we went and I wasn't about to let go! When ever you get ready to go, just let me know!

We were hunting an island along the river and the intercoastal. It was a series of levies and huge basins filled with cane, briars and brush. That was the thickest cane i've ever been in... acres and acres of it. You're right about not wanting a rough dog in there... little bitty boars had some real big teeth.
