What difference does a title make for an ATV if you have a bill of sale? Who cares when you can't drive on the road anyway?

Never been in the situation but have heard of DPS stopping and checking on the highway.
Sure easier/quicker if you had the title with your name on it.

I've been checked several times heading to south Texas with 5 fourwheelers in tow. Pulled over, and they ran the vin# on each bike. I did not have the title on one of them, just a bill of sale. Officers told me in the future, when buying a bike without title, to call the local SO and have them run the vin to make sure it has not been reported as stolen.  As long as it comes up clean, there should be no problems in the future.

These days I just er on the side of caution, and only buy bikes with titles.

I had a friend that purchased a wheeler and was checked by dps. he had had it for two years and paid a good amount for it. It came up stolen and they impounded it. He was just out the amount he paid for it. He had purchased it from a friend but the friend bought it from a man he didnt know with a bogus bill of sale. Also, i just had both of my atv's stolen from my barn and my homeowners insurance said they dont pay on vehicles that are supposed to be titled. Luckily i had them insured through my auto insurance so they paid out on them.

I was asking because I found one that was flooded and the dealer is saying no title. But if I have a bill of sale and it is not stolen then could I get get a new title from the county tax office?

Its about the $$$ and keeping track of how many vehicles are out there. I wouldn't buy any thing with out a title or bill of sale, but I have several that I have never switched into my name just because there is no reason to.

I wonder if you can get a bonded title for an atv?  I've had to do it for auto's but haven't tried on four wheelers yet.
