Reading here sometimes people always want a young finished dog to buy. IMO it is tough to find a 2yo dog that has enough hunting experience to call finished. There are plenty out there but why wouldn't someone buy a 5 - 7 yr old experienced dog? So here is the question. What do you consider a pup? A Juvenile? Dog in its prime? an old dog?
pup 0-14mo juvenile 14mo- 3yrs prime 4-8 yrs 9+ would be an old dog under the right conditions could still have a couple of yrs left under it's belt to hunt.

Dead on. I dont think a dog matures to he is atleast 3 to 3 1/2 years old. Very few dogs two years are really finished dogs atleast I have never had one had some good ones but completly finished is a different story.

I think you are right on target with those estimates.. A lot of times I have seen folks that have a 2 year old that is just startin to finish a track and find on his own and bam, they call him a finish dog.. They dont think about the ole dogs that the 2 year old is huntin with is the ones that are actually puttin the young dog in the vacinity of where the hogs are for the young dog to find it.. If the 2 yr old is a pack dog and stays close with the old dogs, that is how he learns how to wind and track IMO. Take the older dogs out of the picture and take the 2 yr old out on his own and then see if he can range out 600 yards with no sign on the ground and then see what u got..

I believe on average you are pretty much right, but some dogs mature faster than others. Me personally I would not consider a dog finished until I can take it out and know if there is a hog out there it will find it and know that it will absolutely not run any trash no matter what happens. i know a lot of people will try to sell you a finished dog that is no more than lightly started.

This is how I have it worked out in my mind but I like to keep it simple
0-12 months = puppy 1yr-2yr = young dog 2yr and up = dog
