While I would not try to breed a stray I would put them on a hog and see what happens.

I know on of my buddies has a pit bull mix he got off an old lady off the side of the road and its one of his best find dogs. His other buddy has got an australian shepard pit mix and he will bay his butt off. We went to a bayin in Demascus this last weekend and the won 3rd out of about 22 teams. Tough little dogs.

Best hog dog I've ever owned my wife brought home out of a "free pups" basket outside a hardware store...

A very highly respected dog man/friend of mine just had a mangy yard dog show up on his place...   he was on the way to work a group of bulls and did not have a gun on him or this story would have ended...  as he headed toward the pasture, the dog tagged along.... before they got to the pasture, a good boar hog stepped out and, just as quickly, stepped back in and rolled out... this yard dog hit the track and pulled out too... 10 min later... "yowp- yowp- yowp"... bayed solid...

Next day, as he's telling me about this dog, the dog is ringing a group of cattle in the arena the entire time... by itself.

Never know what a stray might show you....

Personally, I'll give any dog a chance that shows me they want to hunt.

My first pack were all dogs I brought home from the shelter! So I'll definately give any dog a chance to show what it's got. Being that I worked at the shelter I also had them all fixed. It was about seeing what I could produce out of the unwanteds and givng them a chance at a life. They've all passed on now except for my Whippet/ Bull who is at my brother in laws house.

My bulldog gyp come from the dump. Shes not fullblood pit but she has been catching pigs from the first time she ever seen one. Had a cur that was pretty good until gators got him. I will give any dog a chance that wants one. Heck what are you out of besides a little feed.

A friend of mine picked up a blue leopard pup at the grocery store about 19 years ago and brought it to my house to show me. It was a good looking pup but I told him not to get his hopes up about it.
That dog turned out to be a pretty good hog dog I have to say. He was getting pretty good about finding one also but he was rough. Got killed by a boar before he was two.
I have never bother with feed store freebies but folks that do get lucky sometimes.
Pretty don’t find a hog either but any dog that is good at finding one is just plain pretty to me! Wink

My buddy Shawn will give them all a chance and he has ended up with some pretty good mutt hogdogs. He got a brindle dog from the pound that I think was mostly mt.cur that turned into an awesome dog. He rigged a hog and bayed it the first time we took him to the woods. He was super fast and gritty. He lived 8 months..

Here is my mutt. Not a planned breeding at all. I know his momma is cat and the guy said that she aint worth a dang huntin and to this day i still dont know what his daddy is. He is suppose to be pit but I dont see it at all. Sucker looks like he has some dane in him. Anyways he was free and has turned out to be my best dog. He was in a bayin this last weekend and got fourth place. First time ever in a bay pen. I couldnt have asked for a better dog. He will roll out about 700-800 yards on a regular bases. If he was on some more hogs he really would be jam up. Just thought I would show a pic of him.
