Have any of yall tried one of those ultrasonic bark limiting devices?
Between my roommates dogs barking all of the time, and my pups, my grown dogs are starting to bark incessantly too; even though they used to be dead silent in the kennels.
I cant handle a whole kennel full of barking dogs and I don't think that I can really afford to go out and buy 14 new bark collars so I am looking for alternatives......
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Steve

Here's what I did and it works great. I may catch alot of flak for suggesting this but it will fix your problem I gaurantee it. My dogs still bark but only if the meter reader or someone is in my back yard now witch is ok. I just dont want them barking for no reason. Get you a Daisy Red Rider BB gun. Don't get a powerfull pellet gun. Set some cans up and get good with it first. When they start barking crack that bedroom window if possible and pop their ass. Don't shoot at the head or mid section aim for tha ass so you won't hurt them. I wouldn't do it if they are very close either. You don't want to injure them just cause alittle pain. You won't have to hit them more than once usually and they get the idea real quick. Then you can start popping the gate or dog house and they will go inside and shut up quick. And then when they see that curtin open and window raise you won't even have to shoot they will run in the dog house. Eventually they learn barking all the time is a bad idea. I would not do this on pups for obvious reasons. I bay and shoot alot and it hasn't effected them one bit. They aren't scared at the least of a gun in the woods. If you don't like the idea of a BB gun get a paint ball gun. I bet it would work good to. If anyone has any negative remarks save it for someone else. It has worked great.

All three of these suggestions are the kind of thing that kept MY dogs from barking for so long. I not only believe in but have also prescribed to these methods, and they work!
Unfortunately, these methods are not an option with my roommates dogs and I have too many pups to be effective with limited focus.
I'm thinking that I am just going to buy about 5 good old fashioned electric bark collars and rotate them around to the routine offenders........
Unless someone says they have had good luck with the sonic bark eliminator........

Roommates dogs or not, I'd prescribe a good sound ass whoopin' to the repeat offenders. I don't think the dogs will be the only ones "getting the picture."

My situation is a little different because I don't really have other dogs encouraging the barking. When I bring in a dog that is unfamiliar with my "rules", first thing I do is put my shock collar on them before they hit the kennels. At that point I won't even turn it on, but they will wear it.
Come dark, if they decide to make noise I will go turn the collar on, grab a drink and sit on the patio. The second they bark, I yell "hush" and hit the button. Usually within 2 - 3 beers, my point is made. My dogs still occasionally will bark a time or two, but all I have to do is open the back door and holler back towards the kennels "HUSH" and their just as quiet as church mice.
The trick to using a collar, is to not let the dog figure out thats what the shock is coming from. Just like I do with pups in training, I will put the collar on different dogs for just a day or two here or there and most of the time not turn it on. When I trashbreak pups, I do the same thing. When planning to hunt on Saturday, I will put the collar on around Wednesday then also let them wear it for a day or so afterwards. It's all about fooling their minds.

Steve- Robert swears by his sonic thing. I am also wantting to get one. The BB gun works well but with 5 or more dogs it would be a pain in the butt to do and then add in the fact that they brk alot at night makes it worse. Most of my dogs are collar smart so I just put fake ones on them when I think aout it. Let me now if you get that sonic thing............I will let you spend the money first.

Waste your own $50! Or you could come over with a case of beer and we can just sit on the porch and light $10s on fire for fun.......... Steve

I bought one of those PetSafe no-bark collars and had nothing but trouble with it. Although it says right on the directions that other sounds will not activate it... they did. It did work well for a single dog application but I had mixed results with the dog getting buzzed irregularly from other signals(other dogs barking). A human actuated training collar would be more effective imo, but I guarantee a stern talking to with the whole pack would work too... if your room mates could handle it.

Well, I got the gadget today, slapped a 9v battery in it and hung it in a tree between my kennels and my roommates kennel. One bark and all of my dogs, and even my 3 to 4 month old puppies shut up.
My roommates dogs on the other hand are not the brightest bulbs. It took them about 5 minutes to figure out that it was their barking that triggered that ear piercing sound. I have not heard a peep from any of them since.
Was this method cheating? YES! Do I think that it instills the same value as good old fashioned one on one training? NO!
It did however shut up my roommates dogs and for that, I take great pleasure.
Ill report again with more long term results.
Steve
