I have to say I got some bad news today! my pup that is 9 months will have to be put down! :'( She has hip displasia which really sucks! I thought she was walking funny but come to find out the whole litter has it! NOT GOOD!! I broke it to the ol lady and I got an ear full! Has anyone else had to do this with a pup? Thanks for reading!

Yup we have had to one time. It's genetic so we put down that pup, his siblings , his mother, his daddy and everything in the kennel that had had any blood from the old gyp who started it all. I am talking some top notch finished dogs had to go to, not just pups. Not only that, we called everyone who had any dogs with any of that old Gyps blood in them and told them. Took a while and some money to get it all traced back but we felt that was necessary. You are just fooling yourself to do other wise in my opinion. There is no cure for it. I never want to go through that again. No if's, and's or but's about it, it is genetic and it will rear it's ugly head again, all it takes is breed to two "carriers "who may themselves show no signs, but carry the gene. Yes there is a DNA test.

O man! That is bad news!
Unfortunatly, the only responsible way to deal with it is how skoalbandett did.

I could see both sides of the arguments on putting down the parents. Without a doubt the dogs should never be bred, and getting fixed solves that one. On the other hand, when you breed a line of dogs for a long time, this is exactly what you don't want showing up, and when it does, you deal with it the way Skoal did. At any age a cull is a cull, and no matter how good the dog is, I couldn't see wasting time on a dog that may turn out great, but I would never have the chance to breed. If i'm raising dogs outta a bloodline, then every dog in my yard will be a good representative of the breed in every way, if not, they are culled. Just my .02 though

I totally understand wanting to spend your energy on dogs youll be able to get dogs out of, but if they are top notch finished dogs youve already invested your time money and effort into why waste all that just cause you cant get dogs out of them?? If anyone ever comes accross that problem ill take the dogs for the cost of the bullett cause i dont mind a good finished dog for less than a buck

Its a really good point, but your talking about a man who has been breeding dogs longer than i been alive. Some people can be (for lack of better word) peculiar when it comes to their dogs and their blood. I see it being point of the matter kind of deal. The dogs had a trait I don't tolerate so they don't stay here kind of mindset. I imagine it took awhile for him to track all those dogs down, which was a helluva thing to do, and it was started out to get rid of the trait so he did. Really no right or wrong deal there, I see ur point, just trying see it differently

Really only Skoal knows why so maybe he'll shed some light on it further.
I didn't mean to step on no toes Skoal, so if I did I'll say sorry ahead of time

No your right. no right or wrong. But if you gotta start over id at least keep a couple fo the finished dogs for pup trainers, and no matter what id make sure they cant breed again. Ive culled my share of dogs dont get me wrong but if they only carry the gene id keep them on my yard. Nothing against what skoal suggests but FLhogdogger gimme a holler if you got finished dogs that dont show it and your wanting them gone..

I don't know Skoal but hip displasia is bad stuff. In my case with only a few dogs and it would wipe me out. But I would not want it in my yard! I can respect either choice but I think Skoal stepped up, made the best choice and took it like a man.

I have had it with a lab & a friend of mine had it with a shepard. I run Triggs & they for sure do not have it. Guess it has long since been bred out of them running hounds. Can be operated on but not likely worth it.
