Nickshsu11 and I took our deer hounds out to my deer lease on Saturday… Danged if those puppy’s didn’t decide to finally trash on a hog Here goes our adventure… I had my four dogs: Fawn, Drake, Briar and BB; with Fawn being our oldest dog on the hunt at 2.5 years.. Nick had his 2 brindle dogs Tex, Carmen, and his 2 yellow puppy’s Joe and Buck. Both our packs are about the same makeup, good young dogs that definitely will go. They’re still a little trashy on deer and usually have the benefit of hunting with older dogs to help straighten them out. We roll out from the gate and its not long and my year old Mountain cur from Marshall sounds off on a white flag and takes everyone a ways to the south. We finally get them caught and lay out a few whooping! Meanwhile my yellow dog Drake had peeled off and was .7 of a mile working down a creek. It kept showing him treed but I told Nick he’s just messing around, just leave he’ll eventually come back. We ride back down where I thought some hogs would be and danged if about 10 deer explode out of the cane literally running the dogs over.. I couldn’t help but laugh cuz there was no way I could keep the pups off of them. Fawn and Briar knew that’s not what they were sposed to be doing and quit and came to us, Just as Nick’s dog Tex showed back up. We took these 3 down to a creek and they cold trailed in about 400 yards and Fawn opened up. They took the hogs all the way to the front and crossed the main road showing the tracks of two decent hogs together. They made a huge circle and ended up getting back over to where my Drake’s dog been this whole time. I finally see that Fawn gets over to him and she starts working in with him step for step. So we grabbed the cd and made the walk into them. They were hammerring pretty good and would shut up every now and then catching him. It ended up that Tex was there the whole time with Fawn also. We decided to go ahead try and find one more even though the dogs are pretty tired. We were riding down the road to check a plantation when everything bailed off the road and busted a group of hogs. One of nicks puppys started baying a shoalt right net to us on the road just as Drake bayed about 150 yards from us. Briar and Fawn were soon hammering so we turned the cd loose and went to him. The rookie gyp got detoured and left out on shout instead of going to them bayed. We got there just as a big boar hog broke right through me and Nick. The sogs stayed with him a while but pads were already run off and he won. We finally got Tex picked up around 2 and called it a day Drake had been over here bayed on this boar hog for about 2.5 hours. I sure was proud of him, he just turned 2 in January and last year showed flashes of trying to be a good dog last spring and summer. We’re fanatic deer hunters as much as hog hunters so he hasn’t really gotten much work in the lsat 6 months. And right out of the box the first boar hog we caught this year bit his foot and he’s been out for a month and half. Its really an amazing story how I got this dog. My roommate from ATM had bought a duplex 2 years ago in CS. He lived on one side and leased the other to a 26 year old guy just outta the army. He was attending classes at ATM and finishing his degree, well this guy had been interested in getting a registered Blackmouth and my buddy Brett contacted me but I couldn’t really help him. I did mention that if he ever wanted to get rid of the dog as he got older I would want to try him. Its not a week later Brett calls me and said there been a horrible tragedy and if I want this guys puppy I can have it. It seems that the guy’s girlfriend had recently broke up with the guy and it was driving him crazy. He staked out her home and shot and killed her and her brother when they returned home one night. He called the police and turned himself in. The parents wanted nothing to do with the puppy… so that’s how Drake ended up with me. I never did receive his papers, I have no idea how he is bred and I honestly wanna say that he may have been bought from the pet store in the College Station Mall. Ive always had high hopes for this guy, he’s super smart, silent as night and has a great handle. I believe he;d catch a bull if I asked him too. He’s pretty long range too just never did enough to impress me to brag about him. Mark my words as I am bragging I’ll probably want to shoot him next hunt lol but that’s part of it Nicks dogs were pretty rangey. We didn’t see his dang brindle dogs for the first 2.5 hours of the hunt his joe puppy sure enough stayed with the older dogs. All in all a good hunt

I remember Jim Craimer writin' about his dogs trashing on deer a long time ago... I remember bein' suprised that he didn't mind all that much too... now, yrs later, I look at a young dog that can't/doesn't want to run a deer as suspect to be culled.
A dog that can run a deer head up has a much better chance of makin' a hog dog than one that can't...
Good hunt and story TShelly, like the sound of that Drake dog!

Good hunt guys! I love it when deer dogs trash on hogs! That's a pretty crazy story about how you ended up with Drake. He sounds like he is going to be a good one! It's gotta be driving you crazy not knowing how he is bred.
