I had a hog get a tooth into the chest cavity of one of my dogs this morning and he and clipped a lung. Vet said he would be short of breath and to keep an eye on him, then bring him back in a few days to see if the lung is working right. I've never dealt with a lung puncture before and his breathing so far (been about 5 hours since vet sewed him up) has me pretty worried...He's struggling quite a bit in my mind. I'm assuming this is normal, with one lung not working fully, but what are some warning signs that I should head back to the vet asap? Can the dog fair ok for now with one lung? Obviously this is a pretty signifiant wound, but the vet made it seem like he would be fine. I could be worrying too much. Also what are some long-term implications from this type of injury. Input? Thanks

I have never dealt with one where the actual lung had a cut in it. I have had a dog with the chest wall cut through between the ribs and you end up with a numothorax. The air preasure that is in the chest cavity excapes and it is very hard for the dog to breath (collapsed lung). They can fix this pretty quickly though. If the muscle is closed up and the cut is sealed after the muscle and skin have been stitched you can tap the chest cavity with a needle and tube and suck the air out of the cavity, usually several liters, and it allows the lung to work properly. The dog that I had get cut can still be hunted but has a lot less wind than she used to. Unless the chest is tapped the lung will continue to be collapsed and after time of not being able to inflate properly you typically numonia or some other issues and even death as a result of a lung that is left collapsed.

Had this happen to one before the vet sewed up everything and the dog is just fine. What he said to watch out for if the dog starts acting like he cant catch his breath and breathing real fast, hope all turns out good

Keep me posted got the same cut on one. Sounded like a cow that had just been palpated when she breathed . sewed inside stapled outside.So far so good ! Things may change quick.

Its a lung puncture its not gonna be like a smaller cut. He should be fine... Infection is what you need to be worried about.

the vet put my plott on antibiotics for 30 days when it happened to her.dont know what else he did.saw a guy fix one after sewing he stabbed a big needle in her chest and pulled out air in the chest cavity.

Standing at gate bawling. Wanted to go bad this AM. Pulled no air out after closing 5or6" between ribs 9or 10" hide. Think we are out of the woods on her. Can't say the same for Partners CD or pistole he lost both. R.I.P. Brandy

I've had it happen twice once last year once this ur last year my bones dog took that hit live 4 days then passed, this year my charge dog got the same hit gave him 5 cc of pen for a week wraped it them let him be it's been 2 months since then and he is fine fully recovered and hunting again never missed a beat , it's all on the dogs will to , jmo
