Hey guys I have a pup question.  He is 5 months old and shows interest in a pig if another dog is with him. There is little to no bay to him. I had him in the woods doing some training I read about on here. "Tie a.stick to the pig and let him run" well he would not follow the scent he hugged my leg just like the rest of the.dogs I own. so I kicked out an older dog and he would go with her then return... He would not go more than 30 yards away before he came back. We caught the hog and he was not with her when she struck it. Once he heard the bark then squeal he bolted in BTW his name is "bolt" lol but he caught right on the ear I was stoked! (he has caught a 40lb in the pen with the same dog). Now I let the pig go and held the other dog and he didn't catch even though he just caught it.? Guess my questions are whole I be worried about him being another hip hugger? Is it lack of confidence the reason he isn't catching on his own? Should I worry about it or just let him grow in to his feet? BTW he's a catxpit please let me know if I'm on the right path or if I can try a few things to get him off my hip. Thanks for any help guys! Grin

a 5 month pup is like a small child , dont expect him to do the work of a grown man until he,s a grown man .

Well its good to know I'm not the only one. I never expected him to man up just was wondering if he was on the right track. I don't want to do something that will ruin him. He seems like he was on the right track. I'm just over the hip huggers i got lol I don't want him to do that. So I figure with all the experience on this board I could cheat and not make to many mistakes in his up bringing.

it is nice to have a 5 month old pup to trail and bay but those a few and far between. Like everyone one else is saying, he is still a puppy and needs time. The training you are giving him is going to pay off. He might grow up to be a real good me too dog or maybe even a good strike dog... with half pit he might make a good stop dog on a big boar.

one thing i would try is to let the pig go and then get the pup and turn him loose in the vicinity and ignore him and see if he will get bored and maybe he will go find the pig and bay it...from what you have said my hunch is that once he matures he will be on the rough side.

Is it lack of confidence the reason he isn't catching on his own?

The reason for anything he may or may not do at this point is that he is a 5 month old pup..  Wink

i'll use an older dog a few times till they get the idea . then take them on there own . i use the drag and a caged pig till they know whats going on then after they find the caged pig a few time  [on there own ] i will tie them back and let it go . good head start for the pig and then turn the pups lose and let them go find it .
