Kinda like a cross between the devil and a huge rat.......I don't know of much they do that is positive other than provide target practice.

Nice Matt....pretty good description.
They are in the rodent family. They are mean, between 50-75 lbs, stink and have canines as opposed to cutters and wetters.
I shot a mess of them but have never caught with dogs. I was told to keep dogs away. Some of the south Texas guys should be able to give you all the info you need.

When Longshot gets off the Boat he can tell you he has caught with dogs, He does not reccomend it though.
My brother in law almost lost a very good bulldog and a really good Catahoula to the damage they did to both dogs. Several days at the vet with serious injuries.
A dog can catch and hold one, but unlike a hog the pear rats can bend in half, then reach around and rip your dog apart. They pack up and will come to the aid of another one in distress, and will fight.

I have caught one javelina with dogs. It was a weird situation, there was no bark at all my gritty dogs just caught it. They are some mean suckers. I have shot many of them and let me tell you they are not afraid of anything. I would stay away from them especially if hunting with dogs. If you see them load your dogs up and go somewhere else. They will put some pretty good cuts on dogs if you give them the chance. And from my understanding as Bump said they are in the rodent family. Not even related to hogs.

I live here in South Texas and I hunted javelinas with my hounds for about 7 years there. They usually run in packs and when the dogs get after them, they will try and run for some sort of cover such as a culvert or a brushpile. They will group up and try to fight off dogs. As far as the history on them, they are in the mammal family and this is what one enclopedia says Peccaries (also known as javelinas, by the Portuguese name javali and Spanish jabalí or pecarí) are medium-sized mammals of the family Tayassuidae. Peccaries are members of the artiodactyl suborder Suina, as are swine (Suidae) and hippopotami[1]. They are found in the southwestern area of North America and throughout Central and South America. Peccaries usually measure between 90 and 130 cm in length (3 to 4 feet), and a full-grown adult usually weighs between about 20 and 40 kilograms (44 to 88 pounds).

Most of the worst scars on my old cd's have come from tusseling with those rats, Blue had half his face peeled back from one he caught. Longshot had a pit that would killem' without getting so much as a nick.

Agree with all the above............have hunted them with dogs............DONT do it if you want to keep your hog dogs alive.
Side note..........they are considered a game animal in Texas and you are limited on how many you can kill per year, I think the bag limit is 2. I would not make to many public statemants about doing it with dogs since you end up usally bagging more than 2 a year with dogs.

txmaverick your right on them becoming a game animal but when I was younger and hunted them (back in the 70's and early 80's) they were not a game animal and I killed them for the ranchers and there was no limit on them. I hunt wild hogs now for the farmers along with guiding and have been doing that ever since the early 80's.

sorry didnt mean anything by my post towards you, was more of a general statement as info, alot dont know they are game animal, i did guided hunts on them also as far back as the 70s so i know where your coming from, but with todays laws ignorance is not an excuse to break them. I know some young guys that dont know the laws and when they find out the comment is "ill say i didnt know", my comment is "give me a call from jail to go feed your dogs".

No they dont cross with hogs we have tons of them where we are at west texas the are not part of the hog/pig family they are part of the pickery family as in a porcupine family they will team up and kill a dog so all i have to say if u arent used to them and your hunting in places they are then my advice to you is get to your dogs fast and also you will know because a javelina will have much more endurance tHAN a hog and will go much further and u will be chasing your dogs for more than likely miles but good luck hope you guys are succesfull
