The last couple times I've been hunting whenever my dog gets out of range my Garmin has a hard time picking him back up.  I thought this was normal until last night I lost reception and my buddy had my dog on his gps and was still picking him up .89 miles out.  I didn't pick him back up until I was within 400 yards.  His gps was an Astro 220 just like mine so I was wondering if maybe I'm doing something wrong or there's something wrong with my gps.  Any advice or opinions will be helpful.  Thanks.

Jared,

I would look at a couple of things....I know they are simple, but sometimes the simple things work.

Were the batteries in your GPS full/strong?  Maybe, his batteries were in better shape.  You should have been able to pick up beyond 400 yards.
How about antennas.  Were they the same or did he have a different type of antenna; again, both should be able to pick up beyond 400.
Check your antenna connection, maybe it was loose.

How about your other dogs, what happened when they went beyond 400yards?  If you were able to pick them up, but not the dog in question, I would wait and try it again.

Another thing..I saw something similar happen one time.  A guy (call him guy A) tried adding another guys dog (lets call him Guy B).  When the prompt asked guy A if this was his dog (becuase he could not touch the unit) he said yes; in fact it was not.  I wonder if he added your collar and said it was his dog....would it make a difference.  I think it could if you had same collar IDs.

Thanks.  I think my batteries were strong and he has the same exact gps as I did.  I was picking my dog up out to .70 before I lost him but it seems once I lose him it really struggles picking him back up.  This has happened twice with 2 different collars.

hmmmm  have you called or spoke with Garmin?  I would suggest looking at a couple of other forums, each one seems to have a long thread about garmins and each site seems to have one guys that really is smart about these things.  Maybe someone else on another site has a better answer.

Hey... There is a firmware update out for the Astro 220. You have to download a web updater program from the Garmin site. Call Garmin and they can walk you through it, but it would have to be during working hours and you will need all of your collars with you and charged. Blake and myself were having trouble with ours and this helped. Plus, if you get one of the tough skin long range antennas, or an expandable metal one like we got it helps. Honestly, if you have a way to upgrade to the 320 I would. That's what we are about to do.
