I've been hunting with my own dogs going on three years and have learned almost all i know from Monty Bennett. i had a litter of pups a while back and managed to keep one. I walked outside the other day and he was baying his head off at 6 months old outside my bay pen. I can barely keep him quiet on his chain now.. I was wondering how yall start pups.. i plan on putting him in the pen for maybe ten minutes ONE time so he doesnt get spoiled and then just keep him in the woods... Ive been told to take muletape and rig a harness around the pig with a stick 3 or 4 feet long to grab imbetween trees that way i dont actually lose the pig but its like a real hunt to them..
any advice, stories, or free started pups would be appreciated  :laugh:thanks in advance,Dylan.

I think my best bet when I recently started my first pup was to show emm a pig and if he was interested in it he went straight to the cape. He rode in the box back and forth trip after trip and then one day I let him go and my older dogs struck out and was right there with emm, and that was his first hog. Can't keep emm from loadin up and can't keep him outa the woods. I guess he figured if I stay with these dog and do what they do I don't have to stay in this box. Monkey See Monkey Do.

If he was baying that good by himself, i wouldnt even bother putting him in the bay pen...

Is this the first pup you've started in 3 years??

At 6 months of age, in my opinion he's too young to go on an actual hunt.....he's not mature enough physically to be on a hog in the woods. Doing a mock hunt wuth a pig would be great I say.....he doesn't need to encounter a hog that will hurt him at this age. It's real easy to ruin a real promising young dog by getting ahead of yourself with him. Better too slow than too fast. Good luck with him, sounds like he has the stuff.
