Best strike dog we have right now is a 14lb Patterdale Smiley

It depends on where you hunt.
***Please read my comments carefully.  This is how I see it and what works for me, not an argument***
In thick woods there isn't a dog made that can run down and stop a healthy adult hog.

Without a doubt, a little dog can't run as fast as a larger longer legged dog in more open country.
In thick woods a good Jagd can fly.

I have seen very few dogs that can out hunt a good Jagd.  My biggest problem has been trashing, and aggression.  They hunt everything all the time, and it can be hard to get them "tuned in" on one type of game.   Aggression is common with Terriers.  You have to keep an eye on them when you can.  It takes a little experience to know when to correct it and when to live with it.

I've been told the Patterdales are a little easier to deal with but have similar hunt and prey drive.

I use Jagds, and Florida curs.  I usually hunt my dogs "one out", or in pairs, never more than 3, regardless of size.  I expect similar results from any dog called a hog dog.

Bottom or how far can a Jagd go?  I've personally seen 12 miles with a hog bayed at the end of it (one Jagd).  Has more to do with the way the dog is built not size.  Legs that move in straight lines front to back with no hocks turned in will go far no matter the height.

Look for hog hunters that actually use them rather than own and breed them.

If you get a good Jagd the short legs make very little difference.  Most of the limitations are in owners minds.

I think it depends on the breeder. But ive heard a lot of people say they will outstrike a good cur dog. And are really long ranged. I plan on getting a jagd one of these days as a all around dog

and Dan ive never really have thought about the dogs that legs moved in straight lines compared to one thatfront to back than ones that hocks turned in
good point

I will say this, when I was running 2 jagds i caught WAY more pigs/shoats under 50-60lbs than I do with my 50-60lbs dogs. Them little jagds can straight up fly thru thickets!

i use to hunt two jack russell terriers from a breeder in south texas down around pleasanton and those two crack rabbits were a hogs worse nightmare jumping on it bitting it just recking pure havoc on a hog i actually had hogs that were so stressed from the two terrrors they were laid down when the catch dog caught i agree also with doesnt matter dogs size if its a hog dog just an example i have some great hunting buddies that have a full grown 30lb pit that i have never seen miss a hog or let a hog go no matter its size, but the aggression in these terriers were same as i read above they thought they were 10' tall and bullett proof but they would double team a bigger dog just like they did the hogs and most the time if i wouldnt there to stop it i would have to fix a curr or a cat up.

I've been really thinking about trying some small dogs.  My buddy is getting a decker terrier and he's been pushing me to get something similar.  I think I'd probably prefer the patterdales just from what I've read.  Anyone that has owned patts and jagds feel free to give us a comparison.

Thanks for all yalls input esp dan i had never thought abt the leg thing either and yes i had a few rat terriers growing up we used for squirrel dogs and a problem i had with them is they thought they culd jump on anydangthng. A couple of em thought they culd take out our bulldog one day and that was their last day to live. That kinda stuff worries me as my main strike dog is bmc and shes no fighter but she dont take no crap from nothn either. I was wanting to try one or two of em and am currently talkn to a couple guys abt some now i am wanting young unstarted ones and was thnkn abt gitn one male and one female just incase they didnt make anythng more than bay dogs at least i culd breed em and sell em just for that purpose but if that happens to b the case better em both b registered right? Thats not really my goal i am wanting good hunting lil dogs but they r not cheap so if that dnt pan out atleast b able to git my money back cuz im sure there are ppl that just like that breed. Again thanks for your input
