I do the following:

5-7 months: Take them on real hunts so they learn how to act and behave in the dog box.  They will learn a lot by just tagging along.

7-9 months: Once you have a caught hog, walk the pup to the caught hog and let them learn the scent.  They will think they found the hog.  Hope they bay a little.

9-12 months: Let them learn to bay and chase in a pen.  Once a week or once every two weeks is plenty, dont over do it.

12 Months plus:  I start letting them run with bog dogs on small hogs or sows.

Everydog and every hunter is different.
