Let me tell you younger fellas a thing or two about "makin good money" Making good Money will be in your favor if you want to live out the traditional American dream, smiling wife, 2.5 kids, 1 dog (of your wife and kids choosing) and a pretty house with a white picket fence. If that's where you'd like to be eventually, then you need to get educated and work hard and with age you'll attain success. Now, if you wanna be a hog hunting bohemian till the day you die, keep reading Good money comes from long hours, long hours make hunting trips less frequent, but it evens out becuase you have better equipment and a nicer truck to hunt out of. Now the good money, less frequent hunting trips combined with shiny trucks and cool toys will attract a good looking girl. This is great! For a while. A good looking sweet smelling woman is going to rightfully demand more and more of your free time be spent on her and her activities, afterall, you do reasonably owe this time and these gifts to her. ( if you're doing what I think your doin)  eventually this story ends in you dressed up and excited that you get to go play Golf with "the guys" and you run into a kid with a beat up truck full of dogs and a trailer full of hogs and as you get into a conversation with him, you say those inevitable words we've all heard from some poor Ol fella ,"oh yeah, I know how it goes bro, I used to have hog dogs too". RIP testicles... Moral of the story, money ain't bad for a man, women ain't bad for a man, and a career ain't bad for a man, but they don't mean #?*! to a dog. All tongue in cheek folks, don't get no feelings hurt.  |

If you dont have any formal training or college. Then working in the plant is for you. Sometime you end up working a lot of hrs but its worth it. Youll probably start off at around $14 an hour almost anywhere as a helper. You have to look at the long term. Are you a bumb or not? Do you want to make a career out of what you are doing or just trying to have a job because your dads on your ass? Are you willing to pay for your own training to move up or are you just going to settle for what they give you and stay on your tools forever and never move up? Just a few questions you should ask yourself.
Personally I'm not a bumb. I went to college because my dad was on my butt about it. I had a full time job I like and decided I wanted to make a career out of it and I did. Finished my certificate in welding technology at a junior college. Paid for some national recognized certifications and now I just work 40 hrs a week because I have put myself in a position where I can afford all I want and need off of 40hrs. I think the first full year out of high school I worked I made about 40k and that was working a lot of overtime. Every year since then I have increased my salary by 10k a year and still going.
I'm a equipment inspector in so we basically make sure that all the piping and vessel in a chemical plant are in good enough condition to operate and tell the client how long they will be able to operate. You can start off as a NDE or NDT Tech. and work you way up the pay scale pretty fast.
Where do you work schmidt??? Ive been in Inspections for over 7 years Nde lvl 2 ut pt mt rt vt and cawi certs. Worked for englobal for 4 years and just got hired on with JV as a qc 2 months ago. Nde/ndt is a great career if you dont care anymore for college than I did. I've made as much as 106k in a year. |

Im a resident inspector for NDIC at BASF Freeport, TX. I have worked for QPro in the past no longer QPro now it's mistras. I have my API 570 had my level 2 certs pt mt ut vt. I also certified in Guidedwave level 1 buried pipe and road crossings.

10 4, kinda cool to see another inspector on here. I am eventually going to take my 510, 570 and 653 but i want my CWI first, id like to hit the pipelines for a while as something other than an RT tech to see how I like it.....id much rather be in the woods than a plant! I Currently work for JV doin QA/QC work at flint hills in port arthur and plan on stayin here for a while.

I'm about to go back to school to get an HVAC certification. I've heard it pays very well, and I've already been offered a job with a friends construction company. it is a field with a lot of demand.

I just recently started working for lykes bro's in south Florida. Don't make number 2 for money, but get a nice house to live in, benefits and all that other stuff. I could've taken over my dad's concrete business and made damn good money, but i would hate every day of it. So i found something that i liked to do and made it happen!

Yea the new cwi test is a killer, i only have to take 1 section this next go round so ill stomp it, but with work theres no tellin when the next go round will be! |

I went thru hvac. It a good paying job if you work in a big city. I ran calls for two years for a contractor. Just resently left to go do hvac in the luminant coal mine. Pays double of what I was making running calls |

I just graduated college with a chemical engineering degree; it took lots of years of hard work, but I got a job as a Process Engineer with a signing bonus and get every other Friday off and it doesn't pay half bad either!!!

i worked in surgery but decided to move to ER work with patients.
goin back to school for HVAC also. up here a guy i work with went and got his HVAC and 3 years later hes making great money and has his own buisness.

About the whole money deal,
Younger fellas t bob has it figured out! Rschmidt is one of handful of true blue ride or die friends that is with me matter what. Although we are nowhere near made the same. He likes the plant and is book smart as they come and makes very good money. Now me on the other hand I HATE the plant. I hate everything about it. From retarded out of this word rediculous safety rules that good old common cents could do away with to politics to wearing a hard hat to having a safety guy fresh out of school don't know nothing about actual work telling you how to do your job to laziness and lack of work ethic in fellow employees.....and I could go on forever! My point is don't let money decide what you do with your life. Just because you don't have nice new things and money to blow doesn't mean jack at the end of the day. Live within your means and do what you want. If you like the plant good for you have at it but don't run to it for a fat check or you will end up like me. I am a full time pipe fabricator and part time cowboy. I work in a fab shop 4 days and daywork. I am very good at what I do but I now see it is not what I wanted in life. If I could go back I would have never ever have got a job but kept steady work and would not have all these bills I can barely afford for crap I don't need and be just fine.
