A land owner called on friday morning wanting me to take a friend of his grandson on a hunt that night. Called Bryant up to bring in the Calvary. We met in Evant for some good catfish and a few brews. We left the restaurant with the grandson, his grandmother, her husband and the restaurant owner.

I was a little concerned the pigs were going to be scarce on this place due to the grain on the adjoining ranches. I have been having good luck on most of my places and didn't know Bryant would be bringing his bad luck with him....or maybe it was my bad luck. But with a hot humid night and lightening storms...we ended with dry run.

Saturday I got a call from Eric Barnes who deer leases another ranch. I pulled into his camp just before daybreak. By 6:15 Jagds had the first sow caught.
Jack is too nice. Instead of taking an ear from the Jagds. He just catches on the next available opening :laugh

Drove down to the tank for some water. Dogs rolled out and bayed not 10 minutes later.
Eric getting in on an action shot!

We had sent Jack in on a group of 30-40lb shoats that had come out from the bay and stopped 50 yards in front of us. He did what anyone would want their catch dog to do. Headed straight into them...gave them a quick look and b lined to the bay 400 yards ahead.
Jagds hunted there rears off.

They were making 700-1000 yard loops and staying out 30-45 minutes.

Jack waiting for the bay

According to the Garmin they had been 18 miles since the first turn out. The last turn out they were hunting really good. The loop they made had covered 2 miles but ranged between 500-800 yards. We would move the ranger up closer and they would never come in just make a bigger loop.

We ended with a decent 175 lb boar and 4 total hogs by 10:00 am

Good hunt, still hard for me to wrap my head around hogs being on that type of property.... just doesn't seem right to not see a swamp in the background Grin

Savoy,

I'm curious why you know that Rex's boxers stink?

Your right...it's not the ideal pig country, but it is nice. This time of year I hunt in shorts, tennis shoes and most of the time can drive within a few hundred yards of the dogs.

We do have water but not like you have.  Wink

Nice.  Them little jagds look dang good.

Do you guys hunt them primarily as your strike dogs?  Those are some tough little suckers.

They are the only strike dogs I have. I dont know of many that use them as their only strike dogs but several people have one or two to run with their dogs. The type of country I hunt....they work great. But they are at a disadvantage in large amounts of water.

Ideally you dont want them catching as often as they do....but they are extremely driven and rough. I think they know there limits. The boar we caught had them backed off and they were baying.....as opposed to the sows they had stretched out by the time we sent the catch dog.
