Im very fond of the "success = reward" way of teaching pups. Weather it be border collies with cattle, or curs with pigs, I think its a fast way of getting to where your going. Iv been kicking around the idea of starting a dog on blood. With what few connections I have in the hunting business, I think I could see it being worth another dog in the pen. Which got my mind rolling on training, just wanted to hear a few of yalls opinions on dog treats? Dad allways told me when he raised collies that the sweeter the treat, the more the dog wants it, which in turn keeps the dog coming back to you to please you instead of looking for blood, running a drag etc. He allways starts them slow with something like fried bacon fat, then led into full bacon pieces, then eventually a mini size payday candy bar. Just all dependent on how well the dog was responding. Keeps the dog understanding what he did was right, and he gets rewarded for it. Makes sense to me that Payday candy bars are handy , they fit right in a shirt pocket. Just seeing how everyone else does it!

Reward based training is something I am still trying to wrap my head around.  Most high end canine training seems to be done this way, but I am still hung up on a "make the right thing easy and praise them/make the wrong thing hard and discipline their ass" mentality...  I can see how a treat based reward system could produce results quickly, just always wonder what happens the day you run out of treats LOL  Grin
