I've got some young pups that have wut it takes to start strike training. Wuts y'all's opinions on teaching them to trail? Wut gives the bet results in developing a dog? Dragging a hog on its side thru the woods? Hobble the hog and let it run on its own thru the woods? Walk a hog off the road out of sight for teaching them to wind? Or jus cut it out and then cut the pups loose behind it like a chase down? Need some input. I don't want to start training them and do the wrong method and it be my fault that they are strike dogs in the future. We mostly walk/road hunt so winding hogs would be a nice technique to help them fine tune. Pups are bmcxcatxairdale brothers and almost 7 months old.

All the techniques you mention work. I'd start with a drag/tie out...can control the situation more and are less likely to lose the hog. Pay attention to the wind...try and give the pups the advantage of having the wind in their face if you can.

If you want you can progress to a drag line...line tied to hog with a 2X4 or something attached...the hog will get hung up at one point or another.

After a few drags its time to step up and just let the hog loose...give him a head start...cut the pups loose...again...TRY to give them the wind if you can.

JMO....things I've done

Ok thanks for the ideas Kevin. I jus didn't know if "dragging" the hog on its side would give off to much scent. As where in the woods they have to pick up scent from the hooves and bushes that the hog has rubbed up against going thru the brush. I like the 2x4 idea! If anything the 2x4 would slow it down some for the pups and help built some confidents. Great idea!

Dragging the hog is like training wheels. No kid is ready to ride a bike with them. It builds confidence. Leave them on too long and you have a problem. Drag the pig and make sure they know what they are looking for. Then 2x4 a barred hog. If a wild pig gets loose that is not fixed you broke the law. So barr it just in case. Or at least be smart enough to say it was barred
