I have two male NALC registered catahoula brothers !! They are 6 1/2 years old and here lately they really seem to be on their game!! They have always consistently found hogs but...wow...lately these guys have been hunting and winding exceptionally well! I consider these two as close to finished as possible. They are silent and wont trash on anything!! Cattle and horse friendly!! Long range track dogs but love to wind off the road or in a boat! Just ur typical catahoula Grin IMO!!! Do u guys think they are at the peak age wise??? Feel free to post old or experienced dogs pics...im curious?? What do ya think??

Hank and Hoss.....my two best friends!!!

From a total performance standpoint I would say that a dog gets better with age and experience.  That rules doesnt hold true for physical ability alone; I think a dog is best physically around the 4-5 year old mark.  Best physical shape doesnt mean a better dog.  My best dog is going to be 8 this June; she is in just as good of shape now as she was when she was 4.  I think the best dogs are those that are hunted the most and have a lot of exposure.

I would say somewhere around 5 or 6 JMO of what I have seen out of dogs through the years.

Nice looking dogs. At 6.5 they are in their prime.  They have learned to hunt smarter and not harder.

Taking good care of them is the key. Basics really food, clean water and good worming program.  They feel good - they hunt good.

Have a dog be nine this July and as far as hunt goes will go step for step or as long as any dog.   We hunted his grandpa till he was 13 and got killed by a lion.  He was still going strong.

Sounds like you have a great pair of dogs going.

3-4...the dog is in his prime physically...and a natural should be a decent dog at one year and can only get better from there...but like someone already mentioned, the dog needs hunting exposure to peak out in hunting ability...

but on average, different strains within a breed and dogs of different breeds mature at different ages...

we allways considered a coon hound or beagle to be in the prime of their life around 4 and 5 . and should be able to show you all they got around that age . and like said before they only get a little wiser after that age . they know where to look for game and how to drift a track or anticipate the game a little better , instead of waisteing time looking where even i knew game wouldn't be  .

He is somewhere around a year.

Nah, she was a YBM gyp that they had. Supposed to have bred her right before they sold them to you. I hunted with her when she was pretty heavy bred. Pretty nice dog. They sold her when they got out.

most of our dogs peeked between 4 and 8 but like stated earlier depends on the dog, there is a dog in zavalla tx everyone calls old man he is 14 still runs further and finds more hogs than almost every dog around here in perffect shape still
