me and all my buddys hunts currs but one of them got a plott today about 8 months old so i was thinking about getting a hound just so we could each have one to fool around with but i wanted something a little different than he got so we could kinda compete them when they start out. i was thinking into the walkers but what is the difference in a treeing walker and a running walker and is there any way to look at the two and tell them apart and which would be best for hog hunting as far as running a track the longest. but if anyone has any insight on any hound breed let me know. if i cant find a walker im sure i can find a english dog i would like to hear some about them to. thanks

Bo, If you want a english or Walker hound try to find some that are out of big game bred dogs(Bear breeding) & not coon breeding. Not saying you cannot get a good hogdog out of coonbred dogs but your chances would be much better getting a big game bred dog.

I'm sure Halfbreed will chime in...I asked him the same thing concerning walkers. I believe he was saying the treeing walkers were typically a stouter/stockier build than the running walkers. That's about as far as I can go on this one....Robert?

I grew up with running walkers or fan tails as some call them. Ours were long and lean legs for days. I have seen these dogs run a track from sun up till after dark. I'm not talkin balling around I mean flat out moving. I have no idea how many miles they covered but to make the loop they did in a truck it would take atleast a couple hours. I have seen a many a deer bust a farm field wide open with their belly dragging the groun and them walkers would be less the 75 yards hot on their heels.

well finding running walkers is kinda hard here in texas since they outlawed running deer with dogs , but like Cajun said a good big game bred walker is what you need to look for . check around for the lion hunters in south texas . but I have ran many a treeing walker and the older lines were good , I have my doubts about these new lines most are bred for the comp hunts and have lost a lot of the nose and drive they once had and are a bunch of tree happy idiots . whitedeer preserve [ dr. Burkett ] has a decent line of walkers bred for big game and I have heard good things from people that own them . did the research a while back when I was looking for a replacement for my walker gyp she's getting on up in years and I need a young gyp to continue crossing into my curs . just any ol walker wont do . . but when I replace mine I will contact my buddy in Arizona he found me my last one and I got lucky and she [ clicked ] with the cross on the curs . if you've got the money to have one shipped to you California is the place to be since they outlawed running bear and bobcat with hounds there are many for sale now . if you want a young pup dr.burkett has a litter on the ground now he get's 400.00 a pup picked up in fredricksburg . if you want to go the running route check the Louisiana boys or up in Arkansas where they are still used for deer .

We have hundreds and hundreds of running walkers around here. I guess thats plays into why I cant stand them dogs.
There are a few guys around here that hunt Bear, Mostly Blueticks, Plotts, An Tree'n walker. Most of the Tree'n walkers are bigger an stouter just like Mr. Whitten said, The runnin walkers, They're smaller, tend to have a real small head, an pure legs.Try to find a big game dog, Check out biggamehoundsman.com super great website and full of great info! My buddy's got a papered Tree'n walker he's tryin to give me, I dont want the trashy thing, Drive to So Ga an he's yours.

Treeing Walkers (RW): Better nose and cold trailing abilities than the running walker with the ability to slow down and work out a track. Stronger body and larger muscle/bone frame than the RW. Much better at treeing or baying than the RW. Usually have more of a bawl mouth than the RW. Used for coon, and big game.
Running Walkers (RW): Easy to find here in Louisiana, many hundreds of them are for sale after deer dog season. Much faster than the treeing walker (TW). Primarily used for running deer and fox.
I am a plott guy, been that way for a while and I like them. I have not consistently hunted any other breed of hound so I can can assess many of the other hound breeds. If I were going to switch from the plott to another hound, I would most like swtich to the TW.

I had a walker about two years ago and he was the long lean build. Slowest track runner I have ever seen and dumb as a rock. Although I have a redtick that I have had for a while and I really like the way he is built (thick tall and lots of muscle). There is awesome dogs in every breed, just gotta do some research and back ground check to see just what ur looking for.

if i had the access to some of the hounds you guys have access to i would try a couple but its only a few coon hunters around here so im not goin to jump in and buy a hound im just gonna wait and see what i run across this summer without just blowing alot of money. it will probably either be a redtick or a treeing walker which either would be fine to me. thanks guys for the imput on the hounds
