I just started running two redbone hounds. So far man they are pretty good have a great nose and a loud bay if you like a loud bay that you can find.

I hunt 5 plotts and I love them. I would consider other types of dog/hounds, but I just like the plott breed.

Honestly plotts is what I was mainly looking into just trying to find out more information on them, and maybe some one who is producing good one!?
I also was considering Black and Tans I've heard good and bad things about them but that goes for anything I guess what's y'all's take on them?

most all my days , had em all , and that's why I say hounds is hounds lol just try for the big game lines that are out there if your wanting hog dogs . the hounds bred for bear and cat have more of what is needed for this game . if you can't find any of them just grab the first purty hound and hit the woods . no one breed has anything on the other .

Well I'll take you're word for it since you have a lot more experience then me I have another question for you you start hounds about what age!? Same like a cur dog or do you go earlier later? What's the best time and also you do mock hunts? Or just let them learn in the woods?
These might be dumb questions just wanna know what to look for because I never owned a hound I've used cur dogs before and.. Didn't care for the ones I owned not knocking them because I have buddy's that have awesome cur dogs I just never Owned one worth anything, I'm a Jagd man. Ha
Just like colder nose dogs and always wanted to try a hound out.
Thanks for the input.

I started my curs just the same way I started my hounds so no different . and if you get you a hound at a young age and not ruined by some-one else . you can hunt a hound on the same property that you cur hunt . all my dogs regardless of hound or cur hunt and check just takes a little work .

We'll if u say any hound you have had better luck then me. I have had curs & hounds for over 30 years for hogs & other hounds for deer & coon hunting since I was a teenager. Tried a lot of running walkers & treeing walkers for hogs & never found one that suited me. I am talking about dogs that will go find a hog & stay bayed for hours if necesary by theirselves. I have seen a few bluetics & a couple of black & tans that were pretty fair hogdogs. To be fair to the other breeds, If I wanted a coondog I would hunt walkers. If I wanted to hunt hogs & wanted a hound I defitently would go plotts. There are good ones in every breed but you better do your homework. If you want a Walker, find a hoghunter that hunts them with success & buy from him. Just because they are bear bred does not make it a automatic for a hogdog altho your chance of success will go up with the bear bred hounds. As far as starting them, your dog will let you know. Chances are a hound is going to start running tracks way before he is ready to start baying big hogs, so be careful & pick your battles so the pup comes out on the winning side. A big hog can sure ruin a promising youngster that is not mentlely ready.

Appreciate the input as I said before plotts are really what I was interested in.
Halfbreed, getting them to check In like a cur I that because you ran them with curs from a young age? Or did you do something different to get them to do that?

no I hunted hounds for years on various game mainly b-cat and coon . just get them out in the woods young and when they stray to far heal them back up to you repeatedly , soon they will get to checking back in when in no sign . I just started really messing with these cur dogs in 1999 when the hogs started taking over the woods where I lived . so I trained my curs [ i'm sorry can't use that word on here lol ] just like I trained all my young hounds for hide hunting . you didn't want to be chasing a long range dog all over heck and back when you were making a decent living selling hides [ when they were worth it ] like I said it just takes work now if you get on them running hogs have your-self a full tank of fuel cause you may need it . I've got a mainly cat hound bred walker dog and a couple of plotts and they will work this way if started young . not hunting , just being puppys out in the woods running around and exploring .
lol Cajun some people call me lucky , but it's a gift I was born with lol granddaddy called it the EYE

SouthLA, Where are you located? I am in Alexandria, LA. Sounds like you should find a guy that has a pack of hounds and go hunt thim. then find someone else and go hunt him. You wouldnt buy the first car you test drove???Go see some dogs work and form your own assessment.

I'm located in south louisiana close to Houma I've hunted behind Adam Goatcher's blue plotts some people on here probably know his dad mr.buddy Goatcher them dog are bad to the bone but man the night I hunted with Adam they ran I mean RAN and didn't stop until that big boar did and I loved it loved watching them work but they were pretty long range, I haven't had any other experience with hounds on pigs besides that one night now I have hunted coons before and have owned a coon dog but that different they tree so they never really had to run forever to get something stopped.
But I would love to make some more hunts behind hounds because I don't mind a open dog at all it's part of the enjoyment to me to hear the dog work I had a yak gyp that would open on a hot track,
What do you hunt in Alexandria? Cur?

I run 5 plotts and one cur. All plotts are open and very, very long range. If you are ever up this way and want to check my plotts out, just let me know. I dont have the best pack, but they get the job done and I am very pleased with all of them.
