As lacyman said, clean, rewrap n medicate ans as reuben said, beef liver to help with blood n iron replacement
ya just put some blood stop in the wrap an see if u can get the blood flow to slow down. our spray a horse antibiotics shield on the area then proceed to wrap the injury and beef liver works or iron pills an dex if u got some. The swelling may get bad so any antihistamine 2 time a day will help him out!

For future reference always carry hemostats. You can clamp off a artery or a vein & stop the bleeding. I had a catchdog who had his jugular cut. We clamped it off & made it to the vet & no problems. I am curious about your vet that says he could not do any more. Any dog that loses that much blood, either needs a blood transfusion or some fluids put back in. I would have changed vets right there.jmo Also if you can get some ringers, you can put the fluid back in a dog yourself. This is really good for heatstoke. If not that, you can always shoot water under the skin.

The vet comment was in a since that I've got the blood stopped and have cleaned area and started replacing vital supplements to make up for the loss. Vet explained everything he would be able to do and because of the situation at this point but also explained what I could do in comparison. After there's along with all of yalls advice I've decided to atleast try and clean, re-bandage, and medicate. If at any.point things go sour we will head to vet.

If you are around Georgetown by chance I can come put a I'v in him. He needs fluids. Use something stronger then the pen you get from the feed store if possible. No amount of liver will beat two bags of fluids. Lactated ringers are cheap and it isn't hard to start a iv once you seen it done.

Something that is light and easy, get a ziplock baggy, put as much baking powder in it as you can and it still fit in your pocket. It's a cheap blood stopper. I wouldn't go to a bay without it.
I was told this a few years back by an ol timer and it has helped us in the past. I double ziplock bagged it and put it in my 4wheeler compartment. It works alot better than I thought it would the first time i used it. Great advice Tiny.

You ask online and the only responsible thing to say is to take the dog to the vet. But I hate paying a vet to just look and say I did a good job. I have stopped bleeding in people and animals but i ain't no surgeon. If the bleeding is under control then I ain't goin to the vet or the doctor even for me. I treat my dogs like I want to be treated. I just ask myself if I would want to go to the doctor if I was hurt like that. I don't ask my dogs to do anything I would not do. They are just faster. So I treat them like myself or my children. I don't go running to the doctor for every cut or fall. Now my wife says to take the kids to the doctor and the dogs to the vet. So I just try not to let her know

the vet would go broke and out of business if everyone used them like I do...I take care of most things related to dogs and prevention is always best...Loss of blood most always I take care of myself...main thing is keep your dog out of shock and warm them up if they do...I keep the dog at my side on the way home and that dog will spend the night in the house and I will be where he can see me and I can pat him now and then...sometimes it is that little extra that gives them the will to fight and pull through...JMO
like most have already said...we do the other things to make the dog well but stopping the bleeding any way you can is the first thing that needs to happen...

Has been in the house all day yesterday and will continue to he there. That is until I can sneak him back to the kennels w/o my wife having a cow. He is definitely a top-notch cd but he has also become a close member of our family. I totally agree that if a dog understands you will go the limit for him/her, they will push themselves to the limit for you.

Where do you get the ringers?

I would buy a pack of beef liver and give him 1/2 a pound of raw liver a day for 2 or 3 days along with his dog food...but I wouldn't hunt him for a while until the cut is healed because it could open back up...
x3 feed him a lot to build his red blood cells and iron

I agree Mr. Reuben, a bit off topic but I believe the same is true in regards to sickened puppies, i have seen it first hand and honestly believe that had I not stayed in almost constant contact with a couple different pups while sick that they would not be around today. It truely does make a difference....dogs are considered mans best friend for a reason, once trust is earned a good one will strive to perform for and seek approval from its master.......some say they prefer a dog that hunts for itself, I personally prefer one that hunts for approval from his master and a scratch behind its ear.

I agree with you too...I have saved some sick pups and I do believe that being their for them until they get over the hump is sometimes the difference in whether they make it or not...grown dogs the same... on your other comment I also agree... I do like a little independence but I like a dog that hunts with me and close enough to the pack so they can pack up when one strikes...and if I am moving I want my 4 or 5 dogs to be looping 200-400 yards in all directions...as long as I see one or 2 lope by they haven't got on a hog...don't see a dog for a little while it is time to pull that ole tracker out cause they are running a track, running a hog, or already have one bayed...dogs that scatter in different directions and are hunting for themselves I don't care as much for...just my preference...
