Feral Pigs Going Hog Wild Across Growing Area of US

Published: Friday, 5 Jul 2013 | 9:14 PM ET
By: Scott Stump

Digging up fields and lawns, killing livestock and spreading disease, wild pigs have gone from a regional nuisance to one rapidly spreading across the nation.

The animals have razor-sharp tusks, a bottomless appetite and no natural predators, and experts say the invasion of the feral pigs has become a major problem that is moving north.

"This truly is becoming a national crisis,'' John Mayer, the manager of environmental science at the Savannah River (S.C.) National Laboratory, told TODAY on Friday.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that wild hogs, which can weigh more than 200 pounds, are responsible for more than $1.5 billion in agriculture damage and destruction every year. TODAY's Kerry Sanders took a ride in a helicopter to see them firsthand, watching dozens on the run across the 2,000-acre South Fork Ranch in Okeechobee, Fla.

"It's like having a rat in your house,'' Southfork Land and Cattle Company's Bill Wallace told Sanders. "They're just not a good thing."

In 1987, there were an estimated two million wild pigs in about 20 states, primarily in the South and concentrated in Texas and Florida. Now there are an estimated six to eight million wild pigs roaming 47 states.

"This increase that we've seen in wild pigs is unquestionably dramatic,'' Mayer said. "We don't have another species here in the U.S. that has increased at this same rate."

Experts say the explosion in the wild pig population is partially due to hunters transporting them across state lines, plus some escaping from hunting preserves. The animals also produce two litters a year, rapidly swelling their numbers.

All of it could add up to a higher grocery bill for Americans. "The reason people should care is because eventually it could result in increased costs at the marketplace,'' Wallace said.

This is part of the ground work prior to the introduction of the new poisoning technique that is about to be implemented...gotta make sure the public buys in to the idea...jmo

I do remember back in the 1960's and early 1970's where some folks advertised selling wild hogs to stock up the ranches for the hunters to have something to shoot besides deer...I saw these advertisements in the back pages of the field and stream and
the outdoor life magazines...

If there spreading as bad and far as they are claiming wouldn't the amount of damage they caused increase? I've seen the up to 1.5 billion a year for a while yet they are getting worse?

Aint it funny how they always gotta drop that lil pearl that some of the population explosion is from EVIL HUNTERS. Transporting hogs and releasing! They are starting the process of demonizing the hog hunter and and i wonder why they'd want to do that?  Notice also they always make sure to say or allude that hunting doesnt reduce the hog population. The govt fella was giving a lecture on hog control here and TRAPPIN was the only salvation to solve hog problem, he siad for every hog trapped, you are taking like 16,000 potential hogs out of circulation. I told him, well heck, i figure i done took out a coupls hundred thousand( and i just play at running pigs, i aint as serious as you Texas boys) . Anyway, it gets under my skin to see them blame everybody's problems on hunter's.

I agree...it is propaganda against the hunting public...

and no one mentioned about normal migration due to over population, lack of food and water etc...etc...

i'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news   lol    but the explosion is the result of hunting in most parts of the country .  not so much by the hunters but by the land owners and leasers that wanted a population of swine on their propertys to increase their revenue and be able to have paid hunters come in year round instead of just during deer season . there used to be big money in selling Russian crosses to the big ranches and leases just for this purpose [ and not high fence ] leases just plain old five strand barb wire ranches . this went on for years .

Agree with Hogdogger98 and Blacksmith...here in LA, we can only hog hunt WMA with dogs in FEB.  We could put a dent in the hog population if they would open up WMAs to year round.  In addition, the Govt is trying to stop hunting with dogs in the National Forest.  The Govt is creating safe havens for wild hogs and they are contributing to the rise in population.

I love to hog hunt but I don't want to see landowners and farmers with destroyed fields.  Ultimately we will pay the price in grocery stores.  I think if the govt would loosen the reigns on hog hunting with dogs, allow firearms, and give some credible people small contracts or agreements to hunt, they will see populations slowly change.  I know that I've hunted govt land a lot and could have killed a lot more hogs if I was permitted to carry a firearm. Many times my dog box will be empty and my dog will be running hogs and all of a sudden a pack of hogs cross the road....

Are they really talking about hogs or illegal immigrants?     Why dont they complain about something no one is trying to solve.  There are millions of people hunting hogs.  There are to many other thing to worry about for them to be talking about hog hunters.
