Anybody ever messed with it much?  I'm looking for some information, tips, advice, and anything else you might wanna add.

I've got a pet project I'm fixing to start working on. I've hand picked two cows oughta our herd and wanna cross over a bull of my choosing, and it'll be artificially insemination to get the two cows bred.  how many straws am I looking at, what average costs, any hidden costs?

When you choose the bull look at birth rate of him. We usually only do it to heifers so we choose one with low birth rate so you dont run into any probs giving birth. And just research on the bull to see if hes proven producer. Its a pain to go through the work and cow not take. I dont have tons of experience with it but wev done onve a year for the past about 5 years for my grandpas herd. We mainly do it to rodeo stock

Get a pro to do it for you the first couple of times and watch. Its not rocket science but you need to know what to do and the exact timing for the breeding. One straw per breeding. What are you going to breed to bull wise and what are your cows bred like?

In controlled conditions with someone who is pretty handy you will settle 60-80% of the cows bred. No human is as good as a bull for picking the right time.

I'd take them to a facility. You're main cost is the cow care. I don't know what kind of cows you're breeding and what yours goals are but I'd wait until it cools off. Champion Genetics in Canton,Tx is who I use.

A good rule is to have two straws per cow... that's what we normally do

If you don't mind me asking what's the cross your wanting to try?Huh?

Appreciate it guys.

We run a mixed herd with alot of braford and some brangus crosses.  I wanted to add a long horn bull to two or three hand picked cows and raise the calves long enough to see what they'll shape up like.  If any of the calves turn out like I want, it'll give me a half blood to cross over our cattle to draw it down to 1/4 blood.

I want a heavier browsing cow come winter time since we use alot of wooded pastures, and they'd do better browsing alil heavier come during that time.
