Hey guys I'm not in any way trying to tell new hunters how to go about this awesome sport but I see so many young hunters always looking to start up hunting and looking for yellow dogs with heavy black mask's don't get me wrong I love a good looking blackmouth but sometimes people will sell you a dog that looks the part just because of bloodlines as someone who has hunted now for about 11 years take my advice and don't go based off looks alone I have been around long enough to know and see that looks alone don't get it done for all u guys hunting blackmouths I'm talking down on you in any way because I have seen some damn fine blackmouth dogs but for the people looking to get started look into every option before looking at looks alone I have learned the hard way, anyways just some advice from a normal ole hog hunter I'm nothing special
good advice sir, looks don't mean squat when it comes to hog dogs....sure a good lookin dog is a bonus but I can assure you of one thing, "ugly hunts" lol, I have proof in my yard

.
if you are buying pups its a crap shoot but in my opinion if I am going to buy a dog much older than 6 months I expect it to have seen a hog in a controlled environment and if im paying much for it I expect to see at least video of said pup. (this is my personal standard and outlook on pups, I know some don't even mess with em til they are older and thats fine, just my preference) I can't tell you the last bay dog pup I bought from someone I didn't know but I remember when I was a new guy and the only way to get em when you don't know anyone is to buy em.
bottom line to anyone looking to buy dogs, DO YOUR HOMEWORK......... for instance, if you are looking at dogs for sale on here take 30 seconds of time to look at the previous posts of the person selling, if they have zero posts in threads other than the dog trade that should throw up a red flag........ find the guys who are known by and converse with other members of this site and are contributing to threads, helping out other folks answering questions, its not hard to do a little checking.....you may still get a sub par animal but I believe the chances of that will be reduced in my opinion if you take the extra time to research a bit.
happy huntin'
