I know this is a hog hunting forum, but do any of y'all know anyone who breeds this line of hounds. Or maybe some well bred crosses.

good dry ground lion dogs, used in areas of the southwest where the heat can take out many of the dogs. They are more heat tolerant than most and make a lot better cat dogs than bear dogs but still make decent bear dogs. Not my first choice for adding nose to hog dogs but still a good choice.
The guy I know who has some have big dogs but then I like my dogs bigger.

Steve Matthes out of Ca. started this strain. Authored a book called Brave( very good reading.
Dick Muldoon out of new Mexico had his strain for a while & like mentioned, passed on. There was another guy in Ca. who had his strain but I cannot remember his name.
I doubt if their are any pure Matthes hounds left.

Cajun...I was lucky enough to buy that book and get it signed by Steve M. I have read it 2 or 3 times but the first story about Brave I have read 7 or 8 times...I did a search on that book and the value was up pretty high...

I know where there is a small family group of some of the last of that bloodline. Unfortunately for any purists . . they're now about 5/8ths July hound. I've hunted with them on bear and bobcat and whatever may have been added doesn't seem to have hurt them any. I also have a good number of pictures, articles, etc on Steve Mathes and Dick Muldoon. I have a sheath of letters written by Muldoon on what he had done to preserve and maintain the Mathes line. His dog handling was much better than his penmanship . . so translating his handwritten scrawls into a readable form is another dog project I've had on the back burner for some time.
