The only way I have done it is thru the police. If u know someone that runs a pawn shop they can probly help u out. Even if they charge a few bucks it would be worth it.

There are a couple of websites online that's you can put the numbers in to check. It's not as good as the sheriffs office.

NCIC is the national database that houses all the warrants and serial numbers for stolen property.  you wouldn't believe whats required to gain access.

Sure makes it hard for an honest man to be honest. I can get a VIN checked out but not a gun. But if I get stopped and I am all legal but the gun comes back stolen it is rear that goes for a ride. That is why I buy used guns from a dealers or people that I know and they can tell me where they got. So if it does come back stolen it can be traced back away from me. Always get a receipt or a bill of sale on a gun. The last thing you want is it to get connected to a dead body. That way they can see the date of purchase and you can prove you did not own the gun when something happened. Guess I watch too many crime shows but I don't do thing that will put me in jail and I sure don't want to go to jail for someone else.
