My wife and I are preparing to sink some roots in some dirt again and are in the market for the right home, but she has also expressed interest in building a home. I grew up in houses that my mom and dad built by hand and some of that time was spent living in garages or in unfinished frames walls on concrete floors. I have fond memories of it, but my wife has always been fond of security and
Comfort.  Cheesy

What was the cost of some of these building shells? Google searches lead me to nothing but contractor pages and they want you to call for a quote, but I'm not there yet.

I have looked into the same thing but it was a while back. If I recall correctly it was considerably cheaper. I wish I could remember the numbers. I do know that when I looked into it I decided that when I am able I will build a steel frame home. I know this doesn't answer the question but I will see if I can find the info again.

I looked into it a lil over a yr and for a 40x60 with 25' ceiling, plumbing and concrete, it was $90,000 and that in materials alone, NO labor yet.

I have been looking at some numbers for total construction cost. Turn key the cost was within 3 thousand dollars. These numbers were from 2000 in a HUD cost comparison where both homes were built identical. Here is the link.
