the flight school i attend here in oregon lost an instructor and student in a training flight last night in the same heli i flew less than 24hrs prior. when we landed, it was slinging grease from where the upper drive pulley connects to the main transmission and the tail rotor drive shaft connects to that. i don't know if that was the cause, or if it was pilot error. the NTSB (national transportation safety board) just started their investigation, so it will be some time before the full report is released. my instructor said he would note the discrepancy on the acft log and put on the board to get checked out the following morning, which i was suppose to fly that same acft today, but either it didn't get checked out, he didn't note the problem, or the problem was deemed within limits, which is the comments iv been given about things, that as a heli mech for the past 12 yrs, i know are issues, but as i am not familiar with the particular airframe, the issues could have been within tolerance. either way, i ask that yaw pray for those who just pasted away and for their families. thank you

im in a conundrum right now. the more i go over this crash and the giant issue we found after my flight tue evening, if i should contact the NTSB and discuss with them what i found, or what. any suggestions? I don't want to keep silent if it would help with the investigation, but i also don't want to open a can of worms that may not be there. again, prayers for the soles lost and their family, and any advice?

Charles,
Prayers sent for the victims and their families. What a terrible situation. Glad your ok. Also sorry about your situation your in over the facts about what happened. I know you have to feel like your stuck between a rock and a hard place. Maybe you should try to get a little more info before moving forward. At the same time though if you feel your info could help maybe you should go ahead and speak up. I don't know tuff call.

i won't get anymore info that the rest of the community until the flight school or the feds put the info. but like my wife said, what IF its a piece of the puzzle they may or may not know about yet. if they already know about it, then ok, i can sleep a little better, but if they don't know about it, then maybe they should, it may help with the investigation. as a mech on helicopters for 12yrs, i know what doesn't look right, but i also know that if the acft didn't appear to look safe, i would climb into it and go fly it. was that grease present after the flight from the person before me and that person just wiped it up or did it just happen? i don't know, keeping quiet may not allow the NTSB to have all the possible info, but speaking out of turn may break them off the trail they are already on.

well i went ahead and called, but the guy didn't seem to take me serious until i told him i flew the acft the day before and was scheduled to fly it this afternoon after work. he said if I'm needed, it would be next week because the holiday weekend. that doesn't sit well with me. where does a holiday trump the loss of life and an investigation. now I'm more upset for even calling. i guess the feds are gonna be busy watching the fireworks and drinking beer on the river/lake/sea shore

iv only been in a close call similar to this, but it was during deployment when an rpg hit my acft in flight and stuck in the airframe just below the #1 engine and didn't detonate.

I saw that on the news. Dang it Charles, that is a lil too close to home. You surely did what you were sposed to do but it doesn't make a guy feel any better about it. Hope they find the root cause.

Prayers sent Charles. As far as the information, you had pertinent information, it was truthful information, if they have the info, you verify what they already know, if they don't have that info, you've given them an important piece of info they should be able to use in their investigation. You did the right thing. As far
As the fed's response, does it surprise us one bit, not really. Does  it aggravate  us and further strengthen our belief's that govt is absolutely out of control? Yes it does. But you did the right thing. The deceased deserve no less than what you did. Hats off to ya
