I was wrong...I-10 is 274 miles thru la. Roughly strait line dipoing thru New Orleans....

I shoulda known that. Been long time since I drive the roads. The 880 is they Texas. That the length I-10 thru the state of Texas.

That's one heck of a chunk of land...I reckon I'd need few sets of hounds and a week off and week to recuperate for that!

Hell even tx stick mellman curs sometimes got too much range for my liking or time alotment.

But 550,000 acres whittled down to 250,000 acres is just unfathomable for one set of dogs to work in a hunt.

When we started hog huntin we got some catahoulas. We would have races but if they didn't get it stopped in a mile or so they would quit and come back. Also were having trouble in sign that was a little old, dogs weren't doing well. So we added some tree stock to our pack and bred some cross dogs and still have the catahoulas. The hounds work out good in this country, and we went back to the way we knew how to hunt.

Id be yelling 'come back, oh please come back' after few miles lol

We don't hunt it all in a week. Just hunt different areas different days. I'd say on a normal day of huntin we will cover 6-8 miles. We've had some runners go for miles though.

As far as spare time, father of 3 and a 60 hour work week, I'm a weekend warrior unless we get a snow, then I burn some days to hunt. I've spend hours and hours riding around looking for sign to turn dogs loose on, or I can cast some dogs, and continue to ride and look for sign while their hunting. I run a garmin alpha with an antenna on top of the truck. I can track around 5-6 miles with it so while the dogs are hunting, I can be driving looking for sign.

I used to hunt like that a good bit & still do on occasion. Had a Plott called Red Man & I would cast him into a block & then go on & either hunt another block or keep looking for sign. Cant tell you how many times we would come back & find Red Man bayed or running & sometimes it might be 5 or 6 hours before we could get back. Don't really have that kind of land to hunt any more.

  I only have a couple of long range Plotts & the rest are 400-800 yard dogs.

I don't know why, possibly just bad luck or poor dogs but I have honestly never hunted with a dog that would "cast" (without being on a trail or running) that would make 3 mile circles.     Once on a track I would not expect any of my dogs back until I catch them but just looking is another thing all together.    How do you guys trash break these dogs that go that deep.   Seems like as youngsters they would commonly be on off game while on these wide hunting missions.     The main reason I keep my dogs close is so as young mischevious pups I can tell when they are goofing off.   A dog I could 100% trust that would cover that much country would difinately be an asset but I just can't see how correction at an early age would be possible.

Our main walker dog is broke off deer. He will run a coyote on occasion but not a deer. Problem with our country is, they will see 10 deer before they find a pig most of the time. When I cast the older dog, I only send 2 pups with him. If they jump and run and he checks them and doesn't go with them, they get toned unless they don't quit then we bump em.

But trainin hound crosses, I go out to our main farm, which doesn't have any pigs, and let them hunt up a deer and jump it then hit the train button. Then turn em around and head right back to the bay pen and let them bay a hog. A couple times of getting broke off deer like that, they start to leave them alone.

But every dog I have will run a coyote on occasion. Their not bad after them but a couple weeks ago they did run one for 2 1/2 miles.

x2 on that. I like to hunt with just about anybody but I'd have to tell this fella to leave his dogs in the truck. Lol.

Cajun, my son and I were lucky enough to get an invite to hunt with a friend from fla once when i was green as grass that did something similar. Alot of times that crosses my mind. If I had a hound  and tge properties i hunted were big enough I'd probably do it the way he did.

...anyway. We hunted four dif hunts that wknd.
 
Dif size spots and dif folks and their dogs as well.

On one all day hunt hunt it was just my son and Ariel and I.

He had a big lease he had access to.

He brought a couple curs and a wide open walker dog. Right when we got there we drove until we found moderatly new tracks where a good hog had crossed in the mud on the road.
He dropped the walker. Dog messed around a second then hit the track and started bawlin and took off.
We waited and listened. He said, 'ok, now we gonna leave him here and go hunt somewhere else'. Back then that sounded crazy to me. Lol
We went off to another part of the property well away from the dog, far enough where the curs couldn't even think about hearing that dog. Then we found sign. And dropped out the two curs.
We hunted probably 6-7 hours had a good race, walked miles, my son was 9yrs old then mind you and we had hunted most of tge night before and had another hunt for that evening as well. They finally got the hog stopped at one point and we sent the bulldogs into a thick waist deep swamp with palmetto islands.they damn bulldogs missed and the race was on again.
My bulldog came back and we spent another hour tryn to catch his and catch up the curs as my boy was beat and we were too honestly. And knew we had nother hunt that night.

After we got the dogs loaded it was time to go back and check on that hound.

We got to the block and he was still moving on the garmin. We could here him...bawling every step. Ariel said he had been watching him every so often and by the track he was on a hog. But none of us wanted to even try it at that point hahaha.

We cut him off and called the dog out after while.

I reckon if I had a big spot and a rangy hound that's how I'd hunt it as well...

But I really like my rough, hot nosed cur style dog the best. I guess it just suits my old ass and the average size of the properties we hunt to me

I had a doctors appointment today so was able to slip out this morning for a hunt (which is rare for me during the week but with work being slow I was able to play hooky today). 

I actually took this picture as a joke for a friend. This particular dog is a rough curr dog that is really tight ranged (200 yards at the most unless in smokin sign). I mainly use him as a catch dog along with the bulldog. He's good at that and can also send him to a race and he will stop it if givin the chance. Today was the first day I casted the hounds and he had a fit in the dog box. So I turned him loose and he went with them. I really don't expect him to do it again but was tickled that he did get out and hunt. He was right next to my hounds at this time.

But this is pretty regular range for the hounds and hound crosses.
