While dove hunting last weekend I saw some semi fresh sign along the road at one of our places so we decided to try it this weekend. Its a fairly open area so we decided to hit it at night hoping to find the hogs feeding. Because it was cooler and this was going to hopefully be a fairly "easy" hunt my girlfriend decided to join us for her first hog dogging hunt. We started to road the dogs around 9:30 pm without much action for the first hour. As we were starting to move along a drainage ditch that goes thru the pasture we were in, the wind set up perfect moving from our right to left. I had Sam on the ATV with me to keep him from hitting the woods on the deer property next to us and tank (courtney's bay dog) was chilling with them. Reggie and Peachez were out ahead about 150 yards when they took off into the wind. The got to 700 yards out in probably less than 20 seconds and around 750-800 yds out they opened up. At the first bark we cut sam and tank to them and they shut it down in the drainage ditch about 650 yards in front of us. We got within about 300 yds, walked in and cut Mclovin loose from about 50 yds. He caught real good, Texas Cur legged him and I stuck him. The cool weather was great, the dogs hunted real good, and it was as easy as we hoped. Christi and Daniel w/ Mclovin, Tank and Peachez  The girls and their catchdogs. Tank looks like hes sleeping in that picture!!  It was a great hunt. Had alot of fun, but not so much fun getting all the mud off my shoes and out of my hair.  It was nice to not be the only girl on the hunt for once. Hopefully we can get another good boar next weekend too. |
