I would start with pulling the starter off and looking at the gear and the flywheel.Probably a worn or broke starter gear.Good luck

popping, or ticking? Any chance it's just that the battery is down? If you hear tick, tick, tick... I think it's just the battery.
What happens if you put a set of jumper cables in it? does it still pop?

Could be your battery if its a clicking sound.I assumed by saying a popping sound it wasnt a clicking sound.

Battery might be fine, but it can still operate the lights, but not have enough juice to turn the starter over. Hopefully that's all it is.

If the battery checks out fine when you put the charger on it then I would look at battery connections and cables then I would look at starter solenoid. I had one that was REAL picky about how well the battery was connected to the cables and would do the same thing. MG

Try jumping the 2 big posts on the solenoid with some pliers or a screwdriver. If it starts you need a solenoid. If not I would move on to the starter.

I would say it the sylenoid. If you have changed the battery already.

Sounds to me like the solinoid(sp) needs to be relaced! Mine on my wheeler has been acting up, and i tap on it, and it starts up! Don't hit it too hard like i did. The protective casing on mine came off, so im now waiting on my new one to come in. It still works though, thank god!

even if your battery was the problem your stator would run your lights while the bike is running but since you did replace the battery and the clickin(popping) is electrical so it is more than likely your sylenoid like kevin said.. and once you jump your sylenoid you "MIGHT" pop a fuse! depending on what wheeler you got some of them sylenoids are high if you can find an old say 85-89 model honda fourtraxx there sylenoids are universal and will work on almost anything..
