Well, I thought today was gonna be a super trip. My buddy Smitty was coming up to hunt and my buddy Kohl was coming over too. So 4 people counting the two of them, Deputy Dawg, and myself. We all brought a find dog each and Smitty had a GREEN pup. We cast dogs and they were 4 different directions. Kohl’s Timber dog located first. He’s a litter mate brother to my Outlaw dog. Ray got there and then Yosef got there. Sounded like Yosef bawled a couple times and then it sounded like somebody tried the hog, I’m betting Yosef. The hog broke and crossed a slew and made his way down the creek about 550 from us. Yosef got there and then Ray and then ole Jack. All these dogs are super kin. Anyway, the hog is up on the bank of the creek and as I was getting up to them
I saw Yosef give him another try. The hog hit the water and then tried to come out but Ray cut him off at the top of the bank and the hog went back in the water. They caught and we sent Smitty’s CD for the sake of security. He was about 160# boar. Then, Timber relayed and bayed again about 150 from us. Again, Ray gets there and it’s a nice bay, then Yosef, then a the bay breaks. He makes it about 25-30 yards and they have him bayed in the creek. I’m catch dog free so I eased in to see who’s doing what, what we have bayed, and what the best course of action was. I see it’s another boar but a good bit bigger. Yosef tries him again but gets slung off. Then again he tries and gets hammered. By this time he’s got all the other dogs, including Jack that has arrived, all worked up and wanting to take their shot. About that time Timber eared up and the hog catches hog too. I knew it was bad and hollered for them to just send a catch dog that I was there to help. We catch him and dispatch him and then get Timber out. Took a quick picture of the hog and Kohl headed to the vet with Timber who didn’t make it. Man I wish we could have a do over. I sure would’ve left Yosef at home. He definitely doesn’t fit in with the rest of these dogs. He’s just a little too eager to catch instead of sizing one up.
or just biting when he needs to. Like it is for a lot of us, Ole Timber was a part of Kohl’s family. He’ll definitely be missed. Kohl I’m sure sorry buddy!!!!
1st boar 160ish
Second boar about 200-210. He looks a lot smaller in this pose than he was.

The whole time I was reading that I was thinking about my dog buck. Hate to hear that man. Sounded like the day all the superstars got together. Especially with the relay. I think it’s cool you and your friends have related dogs.

Sorry for yalls loss man,,,  WE have all done that before,, added a dog to a pack when we mighta shoulda not mixed him into that certain group..    Its a funny thing when you talk about which dogs to try and pair together..  Most of the time we dont ever get it figured out to the best of our ability and we end up paying the price and loosing the battles too soon..   A man might say Oh its just hog hunting but I say,, a feller cant never think enuff when it comes to how each dog will hunt or act depending on who you place him or her to hunt with..  Even as much as we try to control the uncontrollable,,,, there is always that circumstance we wont be able to foresee..

Thanks fellas. I know it’s part of sometimes but I expect myself to make better decisions than this. Ole Kohl is a young man in his early 20’s and a heck of a hand in the woods. I gave Timber to him at weaning age. All of his dogs came from our family of dogs and he has done super by the dogs. Takes great care of them, and hunts them every chance he gets. If he has a question or you offer him advice, he’s on top of it. I guessed about which dog he’d bring instead of asking. Then I didn’t pay attention to this detail once we were there.

Arkansas, the biggest part of the people I hunt with are hunting this family of dogs. It’s really nice because we can all take pride in all our dogs. We get to work together on raising pups and breeding direction and we don’t have to keep a 100 dogs each to do it.

I'm sorry for your loss…loosing a good dog is hard…
It is really awesome to have a co-op when breeding and hunting a good line of dogs…like you said…no need in any one person keeping a bunch of dogs to keep the program going…especially when everyone agrees on what a good dogs is…

So many variables in the sport and different dogs. No one can ever foresee em all.

Don’t be so hard on yourself bud. It seems like dogs like Yosef are great to have those days with the smaller hogs, but once something comes that’ll knock the dust off the tin. everything but them gets touched up some or worse. And it sucks we never know what we’re gonna get into.

Oh for sure that’s how it works. I’m a fan of smart gritty but he isn’t smart gritty. He tries hogs when he should be letting them stand. Most of our dogs are salty enough that they are gonna catch the smaller hogs and the big hogs have to pay attention or their south bound end will suffer the consequences. They will bay hogs are in good cover that they will catch if it sticks it’s head out. I like that style. I don’t like the let’s try them if they are taking a bay or let’s try every hog and even worse to keep trying them every time you get them stopped and failing. Either you aren’t 100% committed or you aren’t good at it.

Yeah me too. All my dogs will pull hair, but now and then you get one that is overly rough. That’s not our style of dog.
