I’ve got the three young dogs I’ve started throughout the summer up until deer season (I hate deer season). The two brothers are a year old today, my female cat is about 1 1/2 and I acquired an older plott cross. I’ve got three weeks to go and I’m chomping at the bit to hit the woods. Also the jagd I raised from a pup to 4 years old has a new zip code, the first time in 9 years I haven’t had one of those terrorist.

I’ve got 2 long yearlings(brother and sister) to find out if they make the 2 year old grade. They both been used a fair amount and have lots of potential. The gyp we caught our first hog of the season behind Friday after a lot of running around on multiple dogs. Have another sister the got to go for first time. She may have it in her, but she’s getting a late start for sure.
Then I got a pup I call flop goes back to Mr.Mellmans dogs I may get to start the back half of this year. She’s got lots of spunk and excited to see what she may be. She comes off some nice dogs. Will have to get some pictures of everything.

Deputy Dawg and I have 4 young dogs. Miley and Dilly are about 15 months or so and going good. They are out of Ranger and Moon. They are finding hogs and staying with races real well. So far I really like them both. Then we have a pair of pups out of Outlaw and his niece. I think they are almost a year, like 11 months maybe. The male has been on 4-5 trips and he’s done really good every time. He has a horn for sure and a lot of want to. Looks like he’s going to be the right kind of salty right now. He stays gone and busy. The gyp went on her second hunt this morning. She’s seen one hog for maybe a couple minutes several months ago. The first hunt we didn’t get on hogs but she free casted with my Dilly gyp. They stayed out about 1/2 - 3/4mile for an hour and a half and were in the right places to find hogs, they just weren’t there. Sometimes they were together sometimes not but she always ended back up with Dilly. Today it took a while to find the hogs. Once we did it was a track meet after a bark and the hogs scattered every direction in this high fence. She finally got dropped out of the race. She was spent being puppy soft. I put her up and then a hog ran past us about 50 yards away. We just got a glimps. I dropped her back out and she threw her head up and ran to within 5 yards of where the hog went. She bawled once and shot on a trail and we didn’t see her again until we finally got a little 40-50 pounder caught. He was good for those pups. They actually relayed but we never got anything else shut down long enough to send a bulldog. These pudgy dogs were spent, but I was really happy with my young dogs.

T-dog, my experience in those high fence places is people think it’s easy to catch hogs in there. I’ve been on a couple and have found that to not be the case. Hogs are smart and fast, and there’s plenty of hiding places in them.

You are exactly right. They know exactly where they are going when they run too and it isn’t in that all day trot they have. I’ve also noticed that they don’t stay put. This particular group will scatter and go different directions, then kinda bunch back up. It’s one fresh track crossing another fresh track crossing anther fresh track. It’s a challenge for young dogs especially. It’s one reason I was so proud of my Dilly gyp. The ones we’ve caught have been because they messed around and let the dogs get too close and couldn’t out run them at that point. One dog will locate and within a few seconds the race is on. I have a surprise for them next trip. We are going to use some different tactics.
