Ive got a lil 42 lb pit Ive caught about 15 hogs with. She is a great pet, personality etc and my daughters love so culling is not an option. But not sure i should continue using her.

By the standards I was taught she would have been culled when i was a younger man but im having good luck with her. When she is the only cd, which is about half the hogs ive had her on, she runs in like a bullet and snatches the ear, once on no regrip/doesnt let go, but if the hog knocks her off, ive seen her knocked over the bay dogs a few times she will start to bay with the curs until she can maneuver back to the ear. Hasn't broke a bay yet and once she starts baying she is working her way back to the ear and has made her way back on the ear every time. but what say yall?

And size doesnt seem to matter, she always bolts straight in, in fact the biggest solo hogs ive caught with her as the only cd (one trophy boar, and a few big sows) she was on the ear the whole time, some of the smaller 150-200 lbers are the ones that knocked her off of the initial catch.

Hey man, she’s your dog, you feed her, the only opinion that matter is yours. If she makes you happy and doesn’t piss you off then that’s all that matters. I used to get caught up critiquing other folks dogs and taking their criticism of mine to heart. Life is short for us humans and way shorter for our dogs. If the dog makes you and your family happy then that is the only thing that matters. Nobody feeds her but you. And only one she has to prove anything to is you. She sounds like a cool little dog

Is she the young gyp? What I’m hearing is a confidence issue. Catch dogs aren’t any different than bay dogs in the sense that they all mentally mature at different rates and confidence is everything. A lot of people confuse prey drive and gameness.  Some of the most famous game dogs in history were later bloomers and once they matured they never took a backwards step. She’s sounds aggressive and has prey drive. Right now she THINKS she can do it and runs in there hard. As long as she has ahold she thinks she’s winning because the hog can’t get her off and because I’m sure at that point the bay dogs have started to help her which also boosts her confidence. Doubt comes when she gets slung off because she only THINKS she can do it, she doesn’t 100% believe it yet. Then the bay dogs aren’t catching either so it’s almost like she’s hearing them say stay back, this is a bad dude. I personally would put her up for a little bit and let her mature mentally. While she’s maturing I’d be doing things to strengthen her bite, playing ball with a ball she can squeeze like a hand ball, playing tug of war, a spring pole, feeding her raw turkey legs and such. The ball play and tug of war are beneficial in handling too. I like to tell mine caught hog when I take the ball or the tug of war toy from them. That’s my opinion for what it’s worth.

And Semmes is correct too. I understand you have an expectation or standard and want to know what we all think about why she’s doing what she’s doing. If you feed a dog then like he said, it only matters if you can accept her.

Sounds like she just needs to get her confidence built up like tdog said I have always heard that some really good game dogs didn't start until they was on up 15 or 16 months old and have been told that some was pretty cold until they raised a litter then they started and never looked back like they said you only one that know if she is going work for you or not you are one feeding her good luck with her hope she makes it for you

You never know until you do only way to get there is to  repeat over and over everything is secondary to performance so keep her at then you going dang she solid or her she is secondary or maybe she is part time or she stay at the house but all this and that if she your baby girls dog that’s what it is
