Heck yeah that’s awesome Cajun. You’re right about it not getting any better than that. Looks like your dogs did good and you had the best of company. Those old marsh hogs seem to get pretty tushy.

That looks like a real good start considering they tried to shoot them out of there.

Cajun, I was watching a pod cast the other morning and my wheels got to turning m. Once I fanned all the smoke away I had the curiosity of wondering if guys like yourself and the old man know anyone that is older than y’all that you consider good dog men/women or houndsmen? I’m not trying to be funny or call y’all old but you are both very experienced, accomplished, and highly respected. I like this board because of the shared experiences and knowledge that gets shared but the knowledge the guys that were my mentors passed on to me was invaluable. I’d love to hear some knowledge from some other seasoned guys. Even though he didn’t hog hunt, I love listening to guys like Warner Glenn. There’s always something to be learned. Are there people out there that you or Clue pay special attention to when they speak?

T dog I just bought a book on Warner Glenn and looking forward to reading it. You can really learn from anyone, young or old, everyone has had different experiences depending on where they live and what kind of terrain that they hunt, different breeds of dogs, etc. A friend introduced me to Orval Roberts and we used to go up there and hunt with him. This is before Orval had Plotts and we were responsible for him getting into the Plotts. We always enjoyed his hunts and stories. Orval had a wealth of knowledge on dogs and hog hunting, Going to Plott days I was fortunate to get to spend time with Everett Weems, Taylor Crockett, Holman Fielder and others. Holman fielder had that unique ability that when he was telling stories you actually felt you were right there with him. A couple of years ago friend I used to hunt with were discussing how fast time had gone by and we were talking about some oldtimers and he said, shoot, we are the oldtimers now. Now at 70 I have slowed down, pretty content to let the younger guys crawl into those briar thickets. Mentally I dont feel any older then in my 20's but physically I have to accept the truth. Part of the circle of life I guess. The problem is at my age I should be slowing down but I still love the sound of a screaming race and as long as I can still go, it makes me pretty happy.

You know, not everybody gets to do what they love and have a passion for. My dogs and my hunting circle are in my prayers every night. There’s a day coming for everyone when we won’t be able to do it and all we’ll be able to do is sit around and talk about what use to be. Of course our memories will be bad so when we tell about he great how great our old dogs were we won’t necessarily be lying. It’ll just be our feeble minds failing to accurately remember. You were fortunate to be in the company of so many guys that have been very influential. My health presents some pretty big challenges. Yesterday was a really bad day for me. Deputy Dawg called early that day and asked if I wanted to go today with him and another buddy. My two young dogs need hunted so I said yes but before the day was over I was sure wishing I hadn’t said yes. The only reason I didn’t back out is because I knew the help I had was great and I wasn’t far from home if I couldn’t hack it. We caught 5 I think and I walked in to two of them from less than 100 yards. It makes me laugh to hear you tell about your story telling friend. I have me too. That guy can tell you about the simplest things that were so uneventful to a normal person, but he’ll tell you and just make your guts hurt. I loved hunting with that guy.

I will echo what Cajun said, I pay pretty close attention to everything I hear, see, or read. If we are just stuck in our own experience or even in our respected mentors experience, we could be missing the forest because of the trees. My base beliefs come from many conversations with Everett Weems, Ben Jordan, and Charles Gantte, but I pick up tidbits everywhere, and dream up some from my own observations and still fall short. I don't believe we'll ever be able to 100% understand and predict genetics. I don't mind getting old, that just means I didn't die young. God has kept a hand of protection on me and blessed me with good health.
