Went out last night with a friend on his place, says he’s got a boar on camera at a feeder. I get there and we load the dogs on my buggy and off we go. We get to feeder number one and his plott gyp rigs, he drops his two I drop my two girls.
His main dog gets it lined out and is moving it, it took the other dogs awhile to figure it out. The plott had it stopped and we head to her driving as close as we could get. All the dogs minus my young Lacy dog (she was 860 in another direction) are there and baying good. Grab the bulldog and get within 50 yards and cut him loose.
This patch of woods was nice walking until it wasn’t, the last 50 yards I didn’t see was a slough full of quick sand, cat tails and cotton mouths. Me never being in there before said we gotta get to them, friend says there’s quick sand watch out. About that time I sank thigh deep in it, I flatten out and struggle to get back up. Now more cautiously we finally get to where they are, and I see a young boar the dogs are struggling with cuz someone was kind enough to slice his ears smooth off.
We get closer and he just backs down under the cat tails, my friend spots a cotton mouth and shoots at it. I keep pushing towards the boar who is now under a patch of these massive cat tails, I finally get to where the boar and bull dog are and the only thing I could do was put the muzzle of my pistol to his spine to stop him. Mind you, I’m laid out flat looking down, they’re in a slough of black swamp water and there’s no other option without getting sucked down in that mess.
I could hardly get a lead on the bulldog and help get him out of there, so we struggle to find our way out of there, I fall back into a water hole when he yells snake. I bounce up and keep moving, I didn’t see it but he said there was one heading towards me. I didn’t look back just keep pushing till we got out of there. Dogs had a few cuts and pokes, bulldog was wore out from being on there longer than it should’ve taken but than God we got out of there alive and injury free.

Sounds exciting. All you needed was to have a couple gators in there with you. Makes for a memorable hunt.

Sounds like a nasty spot for sure. It’s amazing how fast you got religious and walked on water when you thought the serpent was after you. The visual makes me laugh. It had me thinking about a story on a podcast. The guy said his dad, I think it was, was deathly afraid of snakes. They were out coon hunting and he stepped on the tail of this black snake and it immediately coiled up around his leg. He broke out in a run into the darkness and ran head on into a big tree knocking himself out cold. Man I can visualize that and it makes me laugh.
Something you said in your story about the hunt though, your friends PLOTT rigged and got the hog bayed. Are you sure it was a PLOTT? Surely it had some border collie in it. Either way it sounds like good dog work. Do you think somebody cut those ears off or maybe someone’s hog dogs chewed them off way prior to this hunt, maybe because they didn’t want to brave the quicksand and snakes?

Thanks guys, yes it was a little more exciting than I wanted. Cajun a gator would not have surprised me one bit the way things were playing out. That would’ve made that hunt the grand slam.
Tdog, I cannot verify the dna of that plott, she looks the part, she’s brindle enough but she does have natural herding ability when I saw her near cattle. Not sure if that means anything.

Do you think somebody cut those ears off or maybe someone’s hog dogs chewed them off way prior to this hunt, maybe because they didn’t want to brave the quicksand and snakes?
When I saw the boar his ears were gone but healed over, not like when those land sharks I hunt catch one. I caught a big sow a few miles away that had one ear sliced clean off season before last. Those little Jagdterriers I had at the time had no choice but to bay that big girl. They got pics of him on a game camera at the feeder. I told my friend it’s a good thing we got him out of the way before he got big, he could’ve done more damage than what he did Friday night. Also got a call last night, he ran another hog right down to that same spot, leading the dogs back to the buggy, one of his cur dogs fell over dead, he’s thinking a snake bite. |

I’ve always heard there wouldn’t be so many snakes where there were a bunch of hogs. I guess that’s not the case where y’all are hunting. Hate to hear that about his dog.
