a brand is like a licence plate  tell ya to whom it belongs

It would be nice if there was an online database that could be accessed.  I think that in theory, there can be 254 different people in Texas with the brand Diamond D right hip.   I register my brands in Harris and Leon county, but I am sure there are many other people around Texas  that have Circle C and Rafter C registered too.

Exactly, which is why a data base would be so vast and hard to maintain. I could theoretically have the same brand as you but in Kleberg County.

With the help of several people, we were able to spring the dog from the pound. Hopefully we can locate the rightful owner...

Please cross post this on other sites that you visit.

Here is a closeup of the brand. Now that I have seen the brand in person, I am not so sure that it is a Diamond D,,, might be some other letter.

That right there is one hard to read brand, looks kinda like a D or an O with legs that come down to the edge of the diamond....got me on that one.

Good deal Chris and Mandi.  I hope you find the owner and hope you did'nt have to pay too much to bail him out of the dog catchers.  That pound should be fined for not trying to find an owner.....everybody has to be accountable to someone and I for one don't think the animal shelters have about Zero accountability.

Chris, that brand is hard to read. If yall take some clippers and shear it really short then you might could make it out a little better.

What we need is a 501 c3 status as a rescue. Rescues can spring dogs from jail when nobody else can. This was ybmc's last day on earth, and we got him out. He would have been on a truck to catch a needle this morning without some quick coordination among a good number of people.

I got my tail chewed last night for trying to explain about branding dogs to the lady who posted his pic. I got a real chewing for branding being cruel and how could I do something so barbaric. I bit my toungue, but the bottom line is that a brand got that dog sprung from certain euthanasia today. Not sure who he is or who he belongs to, but they cared enough to mark him, and we will do our best to get him back where he belongs. I would take 100 arse chewings over branding my dogs if it could potentially cause this many people to try to get him back to me if he were lost.

Cheers

What pound was the dog in? Sounds like a phone call/letter writing campaign needs to take place for this one employees personal opinion clouding thier judgment of being able to do their job. Need to sind out who the supervisor is and if in a small town write the /city manager/mayor if in the county then countact the sherriff.

Krystal,

The "roadbump" lady does not work for the pound. The pound was a 100% euthanasia rate facility, and this lady is trying to get an adoption campaign going. She is working to get them sprung from jail by rescues or adopted out before they are euthanized. Her opinion of hunting dogs and cattle dogs stems from her typical "rescuer" mentality. Because the rescue that ended up springing him really stuck their necks out (I could not have adopted the dog myself) I have to refrain from telling her what I think of her opinion. I can't do anything to jeopardize the folks who sprung him for us. It was a promise I made.

Cheers

Btw, the lady who chewed me out over the brand was awarded the silver medalion by the aspca. Reckon she could stir up a hornets nest we would regret if we riled her too much.

  Hey Chris & Mandy,
That is a great job!  Has the brand been cross referenced to the brands that TDHA has on file?  Another great reason for people to register their brands with TDHA.

Yes, I checked tdha's brand registry this morning. Unfortunately, the brand didn't match up. To make things more difficult, the brand is pretty illegible. Gonna have to shave it to see what it really is. The dog is not a hog dog, I bet he is a cattle dog. I figured that from early on given that his brand is cattle or horse sized, not a dog sized brand.

Got conformation when he kissed my sow on the nose this afternoon. He would appear to be horse broke, hog broke, and cat broke.

There is one slight problem with posting brands and people's contact information. There is up to a $500 penalty for branding an animal with a brand that is not registered to you. I stumbled onto a set of Texas livestock laws on the tscra site. If you have the brand registered in the location it is on your dog, post up. If not, you may want to pay the $15 or so bucks to register it with your county clerk. Your county clerk then has 30 days from the day the brand is registered to send notification of the brand to TSCRA or any other body with power to inspect a brand.

Another tidbit of information I found was that a registered tatoo is legal identification for a dog so long as it is registered with the county clerk just like a brand. It is illegal to transport or possess a dog, goat, sheep, or hog who is wearing a registered tatoo with a maximum penalty of some jail time if I remember correctly.

That drives me nuts... people go out of they're way to make a brand, tattoo or mark they're animals and don't take the time to go to the clerk's office Huh? Huh? Huh?
